Gee Bill, do you realize that I was all of one year old when the Red Zephyr first took to the air?
I was interested to see how very nicely it took off in spite of the wheels far forward, as was the practice those days to save the hand-carved prop!
I also see you have a 4-stroke in it, what size?
Thanks for sharing that video and that of the Fiske, of which I had never heard.
Regards, Cedric.

The voice on the video says it was an OS .26. I got one of these kits by Ben Buckle last year and I suspect I'll have to downsize the intended engine for it after seeing the video.
Looks like quite the relaxing flyer.
Thanks
Bob

Ya guy's the engine is an OS 26 fs and the span is 66". Just a tad over 2lbs.
I have another that flys just as nice and I have an OS 20fs on that one.
Photos below of the two.
This was a Spirit of Yesteryear kit not a Ben Buckle, the BB kits are much heavier.

Sorry Bill, hardly ever turn on the sound for these sorts of videos. So I missed that.

A friend of mine actually recorded that off the original record and played from an antique gramaphone.

Another example of my failing hearing - could hear the engine size question being asked on the video but try as I might, could not hear a reply! So put in those ear plugs guys, yes even when flying!
The 26 handles her very nicely Bill! I used to get 45 to 50 minutes on 6 ounces of fuel at part throttle cruising with my 26! The new 30's are a lot thirstier than that.

Looking at the Red Zephyr you would never think that it would fly as nice as it does. Just a great little sport flyer but I'm not sure how many thermaling contests it would win.
Cool looking design as well.

It's quite something Bill, how these old-time planes perform with propo equipment, and modern engines even. But then I suppose only the good designs have endured!
I have a replica kit for the Brigidier that I got from Stu in Barrie many years ago and a practically virgin Ohllson 23, and you guys are tempting me to get it down and have another look at it - what a project to keep me out of mischief that would be, eh?
May even look at how to fit a brushless if no-one is looking!!
It would fly nicely with a vintage .20 or .30 4-stroke Saito was it, with the exposed push-rods, an early 4-S? Or small HB with the Aspen valve?
Oh my, now where did I stash that kit!?
P.S. Stu Pierce of Barrie afterwards started Spirit of Yesteryear in Barrie, kitting old timer designs in full and reduced 1/2A sizes.
