Here's a picture of the shop as i'm just getting into my 83" Taylor Spitfire, and a picture of the 'clean' storage area of finished models. This keeps them out of all the dust and kaos in the workshop for storage and charging, etc.

Here is what I am doing today. Home made steamer for steaming and bending wood. Steaming a 3/8 dowel for bending into the leading edge on the cub tail. Wood is steamed for 6 hrs bends like a pretzel and when cool will maintain the prefomed shape without putting any stress on the rest of the stucture.

Here is the 3/8 dowel freshout of the steamer clamped in place to cool and dry. Notice the over bend as it will spring back slightly. It bends easily enough that the original balsa wood leading edge is strong enough to hold it while it cools.

2 questions
1. What is the small bipe on the right hand side?
2. Aren't you ashamed having kids come in to clean your shop for you?? 8) (oh yeah 3rd question, what will they charge to clean mine ?? :D )

Nuker,
The plane is the Herr Pitts Special I have been working on for about the last 5 or 6 years! I finally finished sanding it today and will start tissue covering next building session, in a few weeks. Its the 24" rubber job but I am putting in a Gmot 120 CO2 engine - for free flight, sorry no micro rc yet :(
The kids dont clean, I actually get there half hour early to tidy up and set up their stuff (they leave it there) and stay 1/2 hour after to tidy up again, ready to start work tomorrow morning. :)
The kids are great, and I really having them there. One of the guys is starting into RC this spring and is currently building a Sig Senior.

JIM!! Never mind the wise cracks please! Dont get Randy going on me ;)
I just brought it down to the shop today to install the optical kill switch I got from electrodynamics, and set the throws. One guy from Toronto who has the same plane emailed me the recommended throws, from the Ohio RC manual.
Plus I wanted the kids to see it, as they dont get to see too many big planes like that!

Those in the pic are 1.5X2X3 steel at 2 lb 8 oz each
I also use 1X2X3 at 1.75 lb
.75X1.5 X2 at 12 oz
2X3X4 at over 5 lb
All machined square so I can use them as blocks in the vertical

Andrew,
Looks like you have your OWN club here! Glad to see you are starting them out slow and teaching them how to ACTUALLY BUILD not just assemble!
Our Club is doing the same thing with the local Air Cadet Squadron and have been for the past 25 years! The kids are great and sometimes it's fun to go low tech again! :D

No engine shown. Those are clamps. Maybe I should keep them there to hold the firewall in place.
