Hi Gang,
Who should we look for when trying to get a plane shipped from da east coast, to da west? Seller(Rob) has tried Canada Post, Purolator. Not a big plane, normal sport size, bipe. Any ideas as to who else we could try?

Grey hound.... Most crated/boxed models will exceed the size limitations of most couriers and the post office. Greyhound has more generous allowances. The only option after that is LTL truck.....good luck!

I use CANPAR.... they will ship a wing upto almost 80".....check them out

Greyhound will ship up to 80" long, and bill you for the actual weight, not some stupid dimensional weight crap.

I shipped a plane from BC to ONT.......... Greyhound wouldn't ship the wing, because it was too big for them to ship....... they shipped the fuse, then i had to ship the wing by CANPAR. Greyhound has busted and lost things on me.......... if i don't have to ship greyhound i don't. Sorry if i used the word hate to strongly.....to each his own. :lol:

I shipped a massive coffin size crate to Ontario by Greyhourd, and it arrived in pristine condition. I would use them again... :)

All this shows is some inconsistency in their service...you might get lucky, like I did..............

I've called 4 places, the box is too big by volume.

I've left email for Greyhound - so lets see their response.

By the way there is no way to reduce the volume short of cutting off the 2 stabs, which I think is a bad idea.

I shipped GREYHOUND ...LARGE BYRON kits to the USA ... Got there NO PROBLEMS .... and a lot cheaper than a regular courier service.

Box is:

4 1/2 feet by 2 feet by 2 feet for a volume of 18 sq feet.

Most companies will ship in the 6-7 foot range of height, but as long as the overall volume doesn't exceed between 9-14 sq ft. depends on the company.

Weight is under 20 lbs, however no one cares about that.

I've emailed Greyhound Cx service to see if they will ship greater volumes, however I've got a question if I ship grey hound do they pick-it up or do I have to go to a bus station? I don't think there is a bus station near by and the box does not fit in my car.

Greyhound has a bus depot/station in Ajax, on HArwood Ave.
I bet there is one in Pickering. Just check out their locations on their website.
Nony aka Wayne shipped a plane to me from BC this winter and it cost approx $60 to ship a box a little bigger than what you are describing. It was packed well which is the key for it to arrive safely. With Greyhound I believe it just gets put under the bus with the rest of the luggage so make sure it is well packed.
Check out pictures attached. A box made of plywood is the only way to go.....

The big three couriers limit size to 130" length and girth combined....

Yours works out to 150" (54+24+24+24+24)

Canpar limit size to 140" length and girth, so they wont accept it, either....

Greyhound will take packages up to 84 X 24 X 40, so your shipment fits withing their guidelines. When I shipped, I just called their customer service and gave them the weight and the dimentions of the box, and they gave me a quote over the phone..

Loomis allows packages up to a maximum size of 36" x 24" x 72" So they are an option

We ship a box 48" x 4" x 46" from work (about 150 lineal inches) and we have to ship it Purolator.

I shipped a box (wood Crate) to Florida in 3 days using Forward Air for 75 bucks US (Very reasonable). www.forwardair.com the only problem was driving out to mississauga to drop it off. Forward air ships any thing Cars, Motorcycles, ect all over the world. Try them and build the crate very strong where ever you go (Canpar, ups etc....). A good crate only cost about 30 bucks CDN just add the cost to the selling price most buyers are reasonable about that.
