Does Anyone know if it is possible to put a standard airtronics rx and tx into a 5 servo heli. i don't have a computer radio, but i do have a older 6ch vangard . the servo's are already in place but was wonderin if u need mixing

nope. You'll need a radio that can mix the throttle and the collective channel. If you already have the Airtronics components, look at the RD6000 or 8000. Very nice radio at a reasonable price.

But if you want the best radio for the application...get a JR. (I'm a little biased  )

Sorry Jason, gonna have to disagree, we had a raptor hooked up on a 4 channel radio and it flew fine, you just need to Y harness up the throttle and pitch thus meaning you have to have a very good linkage setup! If money is an issue i would do this till hold you over till you can find a good cheep radio or afford a new one. With the 4 channel radio you will need to use a single rate gyro. A 6 channel radio will work just fine for hovering and doing curcits and so will a 4, the 6 you will not neeed a Y harness, just plug the channels into the right slots of the reciever....there is no real mixing involved with throttle and pitch......the servos just move togher....its a matter of reversing some servos till you get them right.

what about my 6 channel airtronics would it work with a y harness?
and what u mean by good linkage setup

I have setup and flown many Heli's "for a short time" with the setup Colin has introduced..... It does work fine for simple hovering, foward flight etc etc but the setup "to be proper" is a challenge..........
If you are setting up an old Shuttle Z or an XX or the like or maybe a Nexus I'd say go for it........ lessons on understanding the geometry alone will be worth the Heli........if you're setting up a new Century, Raptor etc etc why chance it.......................... Computer TX's are easy to pick up......... I believe Andrew had or has a very capable Infinity................ If you do decide to fly with preportional throttle/pitch there is a few formulas worth researching..........
Enjoy..........................

Colin,
You're right, it can be done, but I'm not sure it's the easiest way for someone to learn.

Wayne, if you're comfortable with setting up the radio and can get help settig up the bird, go for it.

Wayne,
GET A COMPUTER RADIO... save yourself a lot of headaches man, yes the concept can be set up for no-mix radios but it will limit you really bad. Trust me thats how I learned to fly...

Since the servos and gyro and battery and switch are allready in the heli and have airtronics components, I would say go for the RD600 Super.

Will they sell you the tranny/receiver/charger separately for cheaper? If not you can allways use the servos and battery pack in another SPAD... :)

Just dont rush into it man, take your time and make educated descisions... :)

I would seriously look at the RD8000 over the sport........ biggest difference being 5 point throttle/pitch curve over 3 point that the sport offers as well as a 3 position switch ............... Look into it, very close in price.....

6 channel wil work no problem for learning, you wont need a Y harness.

Colin,
With a 6 channel airplane radio how does having a 5th and 6th channel do away with the "Y" when there are no heli mixes?

Wayne doesnt have a heli radio, remember only an airplane one.

yeah andrew i'm lookin at the rd6000 sport or should i go with the super ?they should be good might have to modify the servo plugs tho.
and it is just a six channel airtronics i have. :D

I would suggest like the other guy to look at the RD600 SUPER over the SPORT. It has better features.

Also, look for a used set first, I would think a tranny/receiver could be had for under $200 here on RCC?

Come on guys! Help little old Wayne out with a radio! ;)

The other guy LOL.................... figured I'd been around a little longer than that...........................................
*******************************
Save your bucks and buy new............ do a price comparison between the 6000Super and an 8000...........................you could retire with the 8........
for a 40 dollar difference.............
Apparently you can get just a TX................................look into it.......
It takes deep pockets to venture into Heli's...........

Sorry about that I was too lazy to scroll down and see who posted that...

You certainly deserve more respect than that! :)

Yeah helis can be pricey, but he got the whole machine, RTF minus receiver from me for $400, including the starter and one way shaft, rays authoratative heli manual, etc and just needs to get a tranny to get flying.

Thats not bad!
