Hi guys ; Anyone have any tips on building this Yellow Aircraft Spitfire kit ?
I am just starting to build it today. I hope to be done by spring .
I am going to power it with a Saito 300 Twin.
At the Bay of Quint Jet Rally , I watched Garland Hamilton fly his Yellow Aircraft Spitfire with a 300 twin in it, and it sounded almost like the real thing. :TU:
:D It sounded real good eh !
Thanks for any input.

Hi Mike- I had considered using the Saito 200 V-twin but thats probably to marginal power wise. The Saito 300 is a horizontally opposed twin right? that means the cylinders would stick out the sides I would think???
Keep the tail as light as possible, maybe have the tail wheel fixed? as much nose weight will be required unless a big gas burner engine eg. G-62 is installed up front. Every ounce saved at the back makes a big difference. 8)

Hi Marty ; Thanks for the info. Your right that the Saito 300 is an
horizontally opposed twin & does stick through the cowling sides a bit.
It is 233mm wide and weighs 1,750 g ( ~ 3.85lbs) .
Hello Mike
Very good choice of warbird this thing flys like a dream. I used the Yellow retracts all around including tail wheel the tail wheel doors are operated by a round elastic that closes them and a very fine music wire under tension to keep them open. Using a gyro on the rudder ICG 180. Powerplant Moki 2.1 A bit of a problem to start i have to start it the plane inverted warm it stop it put the a/c on its wheels restart and go.
Like Marty says keep the tail very light i used 2lbs off lead in nose (light engine)
you are welcome for more info

Marc- Sweet looking Spitfire, I am surprised to hear you have problems starting the Moki? The Mokis's I have seen seem to start so easy (right side up) with just an easy flip....sounds like maybe a flooded glow plug??? maybe on board glow is an option in your case.
Marc anymore Spitfire photos :D
Hi Marty
The Moki start very easily with the head up but mine is inverted thence the problem using a OS F plug they are great on larger engines.
As for photos did you look at my album?

Hi Kevin ; Great looking Spitfire you have.
Did you fibreglass the wing with 4 oz, cloth ? All I could buy here is 5 oz cloth.
I guess I could use two layers of 2 oz. cloth but it would probably be heavier.
Mike
Hello again Mike
engine weighs 2.8lbs entire a/c 26
Paint scheme from a french registerd spit couple of years back a/c now in Duxford and repainted
by the way Mike i replaced the original tires on the Yellow gear with Dubro's i did not liked the foamies

Thanks again Marc . It looks like my engine is about 1 pound more than yours.
I will only have to add 1 pound of lead to my spitfire nose.

If I remember I used 4 ounce cloth from wheel well to wheel well and then did the hole wing in 1/2 ounce cloth after.

Morning Mike
I used 6oz fiberglass that i buy at Canadian tire from the wheel well inboard and .75oz all over
I have put aside my 1/4 Yak 3 it is about ready for paint and stated on a Platt ME-109
My project shelves now empty i ordered a Don Smith Mosquito so i will be able to keep my fingers glued for a couple of years

Hi Kevin ; The Yellow Aircraft plans call for 4 oz. cloth everywhere on the wing.
Like I said before I could only get 5 oz , so your way sounds like a good idea.
Lighter wing tips make for faster rolls .

Hi Marc ; I kinda favour fibreglass cloth from a marina before the Canadian Tire cloth. The cloth is on a large roll at the marine .
Same with the epoxy. You can get it in large cans at a marina or boat building supply store. Whatever works for you eh.
 A Mossy !!!!!! That is one of my favourite aircraft. Love to see some pictures of yours when you have some.

Hi Marc ; What was your reason for switching tires ? Do they bounce allot ?
Also what type of surface do you fly off of ?
I just did not like the look of them where i fly most of the time Lachute we have a hard surface runway 600X30 and i did not think they would last never used them.
By the way how did you find out about my bouncy landings????[/img]
Has far as epoxy i use West system iff you add powdered fiberglass and silica to it stongest glue you can get
The moosie wont be built for a couple of years (i am slow)
Hers a paint scheme i am tinking about

Hi Marc ; That is a nice colour scheme and a very visible one .
Yes the West or East System( CDN) is good. Especially the big pump bottles.
