OK anyone know a good source in the GTA for some 1/4" Aircraft Spruce spars?

4 feet long should be ok!

Jim,
If you cant find spruce, get some good straight basswood. I use it for a lot of building (heck, even used in full scale homebuilts instead of spruce) and most cabinet shops should be able to set you up.

If you can wait untill WHitby I can bring you some down free.

I rip my own, a lot cheaper that way, but the Building Box now carries a decent supply of "hobbyist wood" for about the same price (too much imho) as most hobby stores. For more exotic stuff, theres a specialty store in Oshawa, Peacock lumber, that carries some of the best quality and variety and are willing to cut to whatever size you need.

When I am selecting wood for spars, I go through a few boards untill I find one with good straight grain (should be 1:12 minimum sideways varience in the grain) and of course I rip and sand them to finish thickness.

I allways make a few extra and you can do a "snap" test to check the grain strength.

Good point Andrew. Also, the greater the grain density the stronger the wood.
