View Full Version : Do digital servos sound different than analog?

I am new to digital servos and have put two in the tail of my plane for a split elevator. They are Hitec 475's. I have noticed they are a little noisier than the Futaba analogs I have, but that isn't my question. They have a kind of high pitch whine to them when they move. It isn't any binding or resistance. Almost sounds like a digital/morris code machine when I move them back and forth. Is this the normal sound of a digital servo?

It does the same whether 4.8 or 6 volt batteries. Since both servos do it I figure it was normal, but just double checking.

Thanks.

Totally normal. Just the servo holding the weight of the surface.

What if the servo was not attached to anything? Would that make a difference?

Still, I wouldn't worry. Mine do it.

Hi Adam:

Are these the digital servos you got from me?? If they are then they will be the HS5475HBs. Just to assure you further, yes digitals do make a sort of high pitched whine. Sorry, I guess I should have told you!

Hello Gary,

Yes, these are the ones I bought off of you. You showed me at your house the working reversed one with your programmer but don't remember any "digital sounding whine" to them. Maybe because they were hooked up to a programmer versus a receiver it made the difference?

Thanks.

Yes, digitals whine and make a lot of noise - all the time! I find my coreless hitec digitals (59XX series) a lot louder even then my 56XX series. But man they are awesome servos...

Adam, yes they made a slight whining sound hooked up to the tester but it may be that the sound is amplified when installed on the plane...maybe!

I agree Andrew, they are totally awsome! A bit more expensive but worth every penny, to me anyway!

My first experience with the digital whine last year was when I turned on a pair of switches for a fellow IMAC flyer on his 40%. Man, what a cool sound with all those servos singing away ready for action. Real HI-TEC stuff if you will pardon the play on words.

That's strange, I have a Futaba digital in my heli attached to the gyro. while the heli is being moved I hear a strange noise (as it's fidgiting all the time) but when it's not moving and sensitivity is low, I don't hear any noise.

I got Hitec digitals for my Sukhoi, now I'm curious so I'll try them this weekend.

The servos are silent when they are not moving. It is when they move they have a very different sound to them. Best I can describe it is it sounds like a digital beep/whine sound. It is quite cool once you know they are suppose to do that! At first I thought "oh sh@t, they're screwed". :)
