fuel tank setup, is foam required?

i have a larger tank than the suggested size, i have little clearance for the quarter inch foam. i think it would fit, but be quite compressed.

my question is;

is the foam required around the tank in a glow plane? does the glow fuel 'foam up' if not properly protected from the vibration of the engine?

Here is a slick alternate way to mount fuel tanks. I have used this method in my larger planes....with Saito 1.50 - 1.80 and G23 Gasser!

I put in a bottom platform for the tank to sit on and use Commercial grade velcro, peel and stick 2" wide. Use the hook half of the velcro on the platform and the loop half, stick to the bottom of the tank. I then make a strap of velcro that goes around the bottom of the platform and comes up and over the top of the tank to hold it securely in place.

The velcro gives the tank a cushoned effect that absorbs the vibration and the tank will not move from its mount done this way. Its easy to remove for repair if there are problems.

This is specific to spads but my tank looks like a witch's cauldron when the engine is running--bubbles and bubbles and foams like you wouldn't believe (I use a piece of coro as padding).

I have absolutely no problems running my engines like that. I don't add anything to the fuel (armoral) either. Just so you don't feel you absolutely have to have your tank padded.
