Without sounding cheap! Why can't cannister style mufflers be made from scratch or here in Canada?Especially for us newbie giant scale flyers?I can't believe the cost for a couple of cans ! I think it would make the hobby a lot more friendlier to our surrounding neighbors. What's inside these things?Has anyone tried to make a set with any success?

I am guessing this question has been asked before?Maybe I just missed it.I more or less just curious if anyone has tried something like this before.

Hey big guy. We've actually been looking into it and trying to figure out a simple way of doing these. My brother has already made a pair of smaller cans for his Zenoah 445 twin. I'm also possibly looking to make a 2 into 1 system for my ZDZ 80 twin. Our main problem right now is bending tubing. It's not easy to bend aluminum without weakening the metal either by stress at the bend or from heating it to bend easier. Also, having the right equipment to make the bend the degree you need it to be. Some of them are fairly tight and a simple bender just doesn't do the job with aluminum. The other option is to somehow find a way to produce stainless headers and develop aluminum cans. The other part is teflon couplers and straps. Not easy to find suppliers other than in the US and have it shipped here, and the cost is the other part.

Either way, we believe it's not far off for us to develop something starting with the slightly smaller range of engines such as 80's, 100's, and 120's. It's very tough to work on stuff like this when trying to keep up with the demand of 2 major vendors in the US plus many other clients ordering around the year. We are swamped with orders right now and are in the process of getting permits and plans for a shop built this summer. That leaves very little time to work on development but I promise you it's on the table. The only question now is a matter of exactly when and I can't say for sure.

Hi James,

Nice talking to again James.Sounds like you got it right.

Do you really need to worry so much about the headers? The engine makers normally will sell us them. The cans would be what most of us need. What kind of science is behind the actual cans in order to have them tuned right for sound with not much reduction in power? That part seems to be a big mystery.

Anyway can't wait to see how you guys make out.I understand it's not easy to devlop and manufacter at the same time.Would be nice to see the price come down from $300.00 bucks a set US.

Good luck! :)

I am making them right now big guy, I sell a set for a 100 twin for $200 CN, They give the same performance as a JMB or MTW, they are as light and as quiet. As Jim pointed out the headers are difficult, i custom made mine for my Yak, I have a supplier for the teflon couplers. I can send you some pics of them if you give me your email address, the pics are too big to post.
