Well shes done and flown and I am happy.
Wing span 42 inch, cord 8, weight is 5lbs 2oz, fuel in tank. She is 100% corro little foam on turtle deck 4 micros in the nose and a 1400 pack at the nose. She flies very light on the sticks,lands at walk. stall is stright ahead. Very simple build and very strudy. I used an FX because thats what I had. Will it fly with a TTor LA, maybee but I would need weight in the nose to balance. I am thinking of giving an OS la 25 for WW1 at the cobblehills mayday so maybee we can get a few out there so others could try them instead of FX's. Just cant see me buying any right now to try out.

Hi Jeff,

Looks great !

Do you think it would fly just rudder/elevator/throttle? (with a bit more diahedral?)

Would be easier to build...

Working on my Ansaldo SVA-1 to be ready for Cobble Hills in May...

Nice job on the SE5 Jeff. If it flies nice at 5 pounds it would be a real jem at 4. Jon and I flew a couple of tanks today with our D5's. Jon's is approx. 6 oz. heavier than mine and has an FX (LA in mine). They were pretty well matched at slow speed and in climb. Top speed belonged to Jon but not by a lot. I forgot the radar gun. Greg Coldwell brought out a partially completed coro DVIII with a .15. Very scale, too nice to risk in combat.

Dave I belive it would as the rudder is very very effective. On the test flight it took off in 10 feet {very windy] and it needed a bit of rudder trim but it was out enough that it crabed 30 degrees. full rudder in the air will cause a roll into a snap if held too much.
Garry I dont think it is possible to get the weight down any further unless I build the way you do. the fuse is 2mill and not too much rienforcing any where, But as we fly at least 5 rounds every Sunday I need a plane that is more durable than yours and I just like the cut and fold method of corro building less than an hour to build a wing it is hard to beat that. Ted an I flew a few yesterday and I took 3 cuts from him, all from the same streamer!! 5 feet at a time you just sneak up on him and nip away love the WW1 combat slower is better!!

Off the work shop gotta clean up for the next project!! The Komet commeth!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jeff: You saw my SE5 fly and it was an LA and not the FX. I never did weigh it I don't think. It had one folded wing and one done like Gary does his. Yours looks great, did you get some bits form Deadeye to help??

I think your albatros was very well matched to Johnny's, Gary. He may have had a slight speed advantage, but I think they were looking their best when doing a "slow-an-low" pass. Also very real when taxiing.
The D-VIII weighs in at about 1.6 lbs with engine and tank but no radio gear. So i'm hoping for something below 3 lbs when it's done.
How fast was that delta plane going?? geez...

Buzz the wing is 7/8 inch thick
Bob I got three views and a set of drawings from Ted modified the drawings to be more scale [it was a free flight model blown up] cut temps and started gluen.
I am putting the flyoing wires on today it realy dresses it up got to go and find a light pilot

I have acquired a Nieuport 11 kit from Lou Proctor. They are the finest in scale. It will be my winter project for next year. I just priced a scale pilot full figure doll from them. It is $ 58.95 in U.S. funds. I don't think so. I got the bug for biplanes from doing the WW 1 combat and so I think I will take a try at a really scale effort. This kit is amazing in it's detail and scale fidelity. I hope you guys have a good season.

Hi Bob,

Billy Bishop preferred the Nieuport 17...probably flew the Nie-11...
Snagged a great book on BBishop and some more paperbacks to trade with you next time we meet...

Bob, the S.E-5 you flew in WW1 combat with a O.S.LA.25 flew great against/with the 'pre production prototypes' back then. Even with the D-7's.

Any chance you have the spec.s ? And can post them on the WW1 Rules topic on this forum?

We are 'exploring the parameters' and so far have the planes pretty close in performance...the more information the better.

Have fun with the Proctor Nieuport, a great project. ( I'm sure I have seen scale pictures of them trailing streamers from their wing struts as unit markings...)

Hint, Hint, Hehehe. Always have a great time flying with you Bob...

Crosscheck: I blew up a set of three views from the squadron book on SE 5's. I think the span was 42 inches. I set the dihedral and component outlines as taken from the enlarged scale 3 views. I did move the nose out by 1 inch to assist with balance and still had everything up at the front with a higley heavy hub. I gave the three views and the patterns away to Deadeye Mike since he had expressed his interest in building the SE 5. I won't be doing combat this year, but, I have really taken an interest in the WW 1 era and the planes and pilots. I got the Proctor kit from Eric, he had it around for a while. I have ordered a new OS 91 4 stroke and would like to take my time and see if I can come up with a really good job on completing this scale project. I think Bishop flew the 17 mostly prior to his squadron getting the SE 5's. The kit of the 11 that I got is 1/5 scale and hence is not quite as big a project as some other WW 1 kits that are 1/4 or even 1/3 scale. It is still quite a build up. Every rib is composed of webs and capstrips and there sure are a lot of bits and pieces. All control surfaces are operated by wires etc. I hope my skill and patience will allow a good job. It will certainly be different from the combat stuff and I don't think you will ever convince me to tie on a ribbon.
