Who in Canada sells the best scale slopers and gliders...? It seems all I can find is great hobbies...? or do i start out with the spirit by greatplanes...? Need some advice. I was going to start with the hobbico super cub but figured id better start with a glider more time to think and react. easier to control for a newbie. :D

Gliders are not slow! The instant you point the nose down on a glider they will accelerate, very quickly! They have very slippery low drag airframes and do not make particularly good trainers. The best thing to learn on is a trainer, a large easy to see, draggy, powered trainer. Electric is a good option, to keep the temptation to fuss with a internal cumbustion motor out of the loop during the early stages, but not at all critical.

All that being said the following link goes to what is arguably the best supplier of sailplanes, gliders and slopers.

Others will of course have their own valid opinions on everthing stated in this rant.

i thought you might say that. the problem is i dont have a car to get out to the 3 local fields here. and with their attitude i felt basically put off and ignored thats the way they are here trust me. very snooty guys and they dont like change and like thier little clubs...very cliche and i dont prefer thier imature acceptance attitude. these are grown men acting like this. im basically alone here and need something to get me started. thats why i thought a glider would be a good start. i have visited thier fields over the years few times and they are really smug and i felt a cold glance when i asked questions and gave my opinions aboiut what type of aircraft i want to start with. they all say go with a .40 trainer. well if i had a car i would but i dont so im all alone as usual. *sigh*

HI Douglas,

I would still encourage you to look at a 2M electric glider like the goldberg electra or the Great planes spectra. There are many others and they are probably all pretty good. We fly one out of the backyard and they are great. Probably best to have about a 600' square at first. It was my 10 year olds first bird, and while they can be fast in a dive, they are also very docile flyers. We used a cheap 6 cell 3300 NIMH from venom and were able to squeeze 10-12 minutes of powered flight per charge. The challenge became how long one could stay up, and with some good motor management, we did get 20 minutes. Good luck.

Hi
The Great thing about Gliders is, they'll fly anywhere!
I second Rusty, get yourself a 2M glider, 2 channel radio and find yourself a hill...

You'll get lots of exercise retrieving the plane. You'll soon find yourself getting longer flights and gaining confidence..
If you choose later, get the hi start.....
If you enjoy this you'll find yourself wanting something else, save your money for that
This is how I started, you'll learn a lot about the hobby !
Gentle Lady would also make a good start...You'll crash and get lots of experience at fixing.
No need to go scale either, a simple rugged glider should suffice. Theres probably lots of used ones out there.
Never tried electrics on a glider, that would be nice as well.

I would get the Multiplex Easystar for a noobie, still soars well and the motor is away from damage. Or if your more for a scale look look into the Multiplex Cularis coming soon! http://www.modelspot.com/mpx/Colaris.htm
For video http://www.multiplex-rc.de/cms/vors...Cularis_web.wmv

Good Advice, Jan.

I think I'll plan on getting a Colaris myself, but as you'll all not from the video its a moderately fast plane, reasonably aerobatic and because its Elapor highly repairable.

Hey RonM, I would guess that he is in Victoria, simply by the description "snooty"...

If Douglas4 has a hill close by, then just ignore the club. Nearly any simple airplane makes a good trainer off the slope. Only real instruction has to do with not going downwind, and having a landing area at the bottom! :D

im in ontario guys (northern) sudbury to be exact. ive been into planes...boats...cars before back in my 20's (the alone route). had fun but stopped cause of the attitude in this area. i also went into truck driving so never had time. since then i dont drive truck anymore and work in a call center environment (inbound customer service not outbound calling). so i have time now finally and the resources so to speak to get back into the hobby. ive always read online and and in mags and kept myself abreast of it all these years. i can say it has changed alot since my 20's. it seems to be more confusing as to what way to go and which is more viable. great starter packages nowadays though. im torn between gliders..electric planes or helis now. man some nice stuff out there today.

ive narrowed it down to 2 gliders. the spirit by great planes or the easy star by multiplex. I was gonna go powered aircraft but with the battery charging and breaking props and prop shafts and motors and firewalls breaking. "eek" i like the simplicity of the gliders. nice and quiet etc. you guys know what im talking about. i was looking at www.leadingedgegliders.com and hey some nice stuff. slopers look good too and the epp foam thing appeals to me. i just recently bought the axe cp heli from helimax to feed my heli addiction and like of rotary craft. but ive always fancied gliders too. :D
