Re: Magnetic building system I ended up just using pine to make my fixtures. I did not go with the diagonal cut on the back. My fixtures are rectangular giving me a 90 on both sides. I also made hold downs. You made lots of fixtures there Jonathan. You will definitely need a few magnets to assemble the fixtures. Nice job you did there. |

Re: Magnetic building system Well I spent some time yesterday at my fathers house using his tablesaw to cut out a bunch of ply parts with 1/4" birch and ordered up some magnets from amazon today. It was nice spending time with dad also.😊 |

Re: Magnetic building system Good to know. When I start making my fixtures I will see how the magnets get used. I also have a stack of triangle welding magnets I can use with a metal L bracket. |

Re: Magnetic building system The largest I have built are 1/4 scale Sopwith Pup and 3.5 meter sailplanes. Though there are a number of wing panels in each so likely not anything more than a 60 size at one time. For the way I have my system setup I would count on four magnets per fixture and four to six magnets per rib when building plus some for the spar(s), etc.. As I noted above 100 magnets gets used up pretty quickly based on those numbers. |

Re: Magnetic building system What size planes are you building? I probably would not go over a .60 size but I can see how you would use up a lot of magnets. Now I need to start planning out a jig the fixtures. I like the idea of not having the slope and keeping both sides parallel and square to the table. |

Re: Magnetic building system The magnets from Master Magnets are not epoxied on and can be removed. You might want to check with Master Magnets to see if they will ship via USPS. Not as quick but a lot cheaper plus the potential of not paying any taxes. Depending on what sort of setup you are doing you may want to get more than 100 magnets. I started with 100 thinking that was more than enough and ended up buying another 100. if you are making the vertical structures they take 4 magnets each which can use up a lot of magnets. I find I use four magnets per rib so that adds up quickly as well. |

If you go to the Airfield site they link you to the Master Magnets sold in packs of 100units. 100 magnets $55.00 Fedex $30.00 Total $85.00US Exchange $111.00CDN Fedex will charge you duty (if it applies) and taxes The same magnets from Amazon in the link I provided was $20.16 for 24 units with free shipping. Much cheaper to buy 4 packs through Amazon right now. |

Re: Magnetic building system The Airfields site has a link to a vendor that sells magnets at a reasonable price. You don't need to epoxy the metal to the magnets, the magnets will hold the metal by themselves. |
