OLD PRAIRIE RED NECK
Re: Winterizing Alternative

I guess I'm going to contradict some people here. I only have glow powered 4 strokes so maybe this won't apply(I think it will though).

I learned my lesson by flying an OS 4 stroke in the winter, the pushrod tubes and rocker cover act as condensers with warm moisture rich blow-by in them is cooled by the prop blast. The water and combustion products(acids) then run down the push rod tubes into the lifter/cam/crank bearing area and start the rusting process!

Six tanks of fuel was all it took, on the seventh tank the engine would not run. There was no compression as the lifters were seized and the valves both stuck open. On disassembly the whole valve train, cam and crankshaft bearings were a mess!

What you will be doing won't be any different than flying as you will have the garage door open and it will be running in cold humid outside air!

Now you could rig an exhaust hose to go out the door...

Maybe I just like the entertainment factor of listening to it. I do vary the RPM's during this procedure. Opinions please.
Fred, Just don't run the carb dry. The diaphragm (fuel pump) in the carb will get dry on one side. Causing it to potentially Taco some what. Which is the biggest reason carbs need to be refreshed with a kit.
I try to not let my gas engines sit much more than 90 days. Run them idle to a stop. leave a small amount of fuel in the tank. Lines/carb full when shut down.
Like Hank, we have had great luck running no-ethanol fuel (premium).

Hope this helps.

P.S. I like running some engines on a warm winter Saturday. Just another part of "My" hobby.

Iv'e been flying the big gassers for 14 years now, never ran them dry, let then sit over winter, never had a problem.
I use super gasoline, no ethanol.
Nitro, they get gummed up, on a four stoke the cam followers can get sticky and the bearings will skid instead of roll. So running a nitro is a good practice.

This is about safety
Aircraft carriers are scary bad

I AM IN!!!! Sign me up.

When do we leave??

Also, how will we get Hobby King to deliver our packages?

You are NOT going to 'Shorten' the lifespan of the engine doing this...

I have an OS70FS that was installed in my P51D in 1992 - Flown regularly ever since and IS STILL WORKING Flawlessly in the same P51D.

Treat them right and an engine will last a LONG TIME!

Safety and Mess are the main concerns in this conversation.

IMHO

Re: Winterizing Alternative

You can buy a spray bomb inhibiter at Canadian Tire. The key point is how do you inhibit the Carb or is it best to just run it dry. I do not like to run any engine dry because then you are running it without oil.
