Re: Pilot Edge 540 35cc Hamilton scheme

Speaking of CG, I have had to use 9.5oz of lead on the motor box to get it to balance 108mm from LE or 28mm (1.1") from the wing tube. If you have the means, get a canister...I think it was designed around one.

As for servo extensions with the rx on the rear tray, 2x 24" (TDRC 20awg) for elevators, 4x 4" for ailerons (one pair out of the rx and one pair out of the wing roots also TDRC 20awg), 1x 6" HD for throttle and for my power distribution 1 custom built 12" 20awg Y (2x12 if you have more than 7 channels available). Also ran snakeskin over all wires that needed it the most.

Choke set-up is the same as I have used on my other gassers utilizing that blue aluminum 1" servo arm from Hitec and 2-56 rod with nyrod inner covering said rod. Peeks out the port cowl cheek.

I opened up 6 of the 8 holes provided for pressure relief...I simply didn't want to cut into the "I" on the bottom of the fuse.

Now, I'm ready to fire it up for the first time...but I won't. It's up for sale due to health reasons. First $1800 takes it.

Re: Pilot Edge 540 35cc Hamilton scheme

Going to use the supplied Pilot tank but it needed the vent line replumbed. Changed out the supplied velcro straps with better quality ones that'll allow me to wrap some batteries (dual 1450 LiFe) in case I need to for CG. Not sure of the big felt clunk. The kit also comes with a really nice fuel and vent dots.

Akabek, I took some advice. IBEC installed in behind the iggy box.

The motor box is marked for a DLE35RA but they do supply you with a DA mount.

Throttle servo getting mounted inside the fuse and the fuel line exit close to each other. Setting the choke up the same way I've done my other gassers.

Motor box got a subtle trim to accommodate the stock muffler and the cowl trimming required to get things to line everything up. Still have to complete the box and tidy things up before it all gets loctited.

Re: Pilot Edge 540 35cc Hamilton scheme

Received mine this week after two looong months. Totally worth the wait, this is one good looking plane.

No manual was included, so I am using the generic 30cc manual Pilot has on their site. They need to up their game concerning this Edge with a proper manual. It is a guessing game for the parts bag and particulars.

Started with the rudder and tailwheel. 30 minute epoxy to attach the rudder. Sharp looking wheel but the spring to the rudder is a bit iffy. Not a fan of this set-up, I might have to figure something else out later.

Main gear and wheelpants were next, nothing fancy but had to trim off the excess axle bolt.

Rudder pull pull is SWB's 3" arm. The kit is supplied with metric hardware, so this is the only 4-40's is the plane. They give you more enough wire to manage.

Re: Pilot Edge 540 35cc Hamilton scheme

My 7 channel rx is limiting me to this set-up. I don't want iggy box supply current running through it's bus with 6 coreless digital servos. I would consider your recommendation, Akabek, if I had even an 8 channel. Sold my JR 9503 years ago (still kicking my ass over that).

Re: Pilot Edge 540 35cc Hamilton scheme

Not to question your methods but I always aim to reduce failure points. Running two batteries for two separate purposes increases failure points and if one fails you either have no ignition or no control surfaces. For redundancy I run an ibec with two smaller batteries to power the plane. If one fails the second is there to pick up the load. I use a Rx that supports two batteries. For 50cc or smaller I just run one battery to power everything to keep weight down and never had an issue but each to their own.

Re: Pilot Edge 540 35cc Hamilton scheme

Got some stuff from the good folks at Pro-RC. They have excellent service.

The batteries are so small I don't regret not getting a Tech Aero IBEC. I'm just setting this up like a 50cc or larger, save for the dual rx batteries.

Think I'm totally hijacking this thread now too.

Re: Pilot Edge 540 35cc Hamilton scheme

Thanks Rick, it was considered. I do have a Tbolt IBEC on my 20cc. I feel that on this size though, a separate ignition battery is warranted.

Re: Pilot Edge 540 35cc Hamilton scheme

Something for you to consider is using an ibec from Thunderbolt which eliminates the need for the Leopard Power 1450mAh LiFe ign battery and the Rcexl Opto kill. You link the ibec channel to a switch so you can kill the ignition with your transmitter and it will run off the main battery pack. This reduces points of failure. I used an IBEC on all my gassers and never an issue.
