Re: Fuel proofing tests - all the results here Buried in this thread from rcgroups are a couple posts on Nelson Hobbies' clear coat being identified as "water based marine grade urethane" to which is added a "cross linker" (performing the same function as a hardener in epoxy chemistries) for effective fuel proofing; see post 17: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2589073 (this post also has an interesting discussion on painting/clear coating Solartex) I am pretty close to concluding that while high quality single component coatings can be significantly "fuel resistant" (including the old Patra "fuel proofer" and clear butryrate dope), a really effective fuel proofing top coat involves two part chemistries, with the second component increasingly being called a "cross linker" if the chemistry is not epoxy and if epoxy the second part is called hardener or catalyst). A couple of people in this thread have mentioned two part auto urethanes .... which I gather are the ultimate fuel proofing protection .... and I gather require extreme care in applying because of danger to the respiratory system. I think - but am not sure - that moisture cured urethane (MCU) - which uses the water vapour in the atmosphere to cure the coating - would also be a likely candidate for being an effective clear fuel proofing coating. I gather MCUs can be applied with brushes or rollers - there are used for industrial strength wood floor protection - so while they also pose similar risks to the respiratory system, they could be applied outdoors. Sherwin-Williams carries the MCU "Armorseal Rexhane 1" in gallon sizes and I think this could be ordered at any of their boutique outlets. |

Re: Fuel proofing tests - all the results here This is a very useful thread. Thanks Richard for taking the time to share your results with us. Sadly 50% of the thread was wasted on bla bla bla look at me look at me. |

Re: Fuel proofing tests - all the results here Excellent post Richard and thank you for taking the time to research your findings on varathane. I have been using varathane for fuel proofing on my a/c fuel compartments for years with no ill affects. The info you have provided will help me on future paint finishes. You deserve a well done for that John |

Re: Fuel proofing tests - all the results here Just curious if there were any updates to the experience of previous posters on how their clear coat finishes held up in the longer term, both to raw nitro and hot engine exhaust? thanks |

Re: Fuel proofing tests - all the results here Hi All, I am using the same 'black can' stuff Richard recommended back on page one... It ain't waterbased... but it fuelproofs to 15%. Over waterbased paint. Cool experiment, Thanks Richard ! I'm trying the stuff on bare balsa, to use it like Buterate Dope. So far, So Good! Takes longer to dry, but, is easier than brushing... Spray on lightly, wipe off, till grain gets filled... Also: -it sands nice after a week of drying. It is soft, but flexible. -1 gram per 12sqin, to get a gloss on balsa. -Works great with CA pre-soaking... -and test CA repairs after, CA repairs ! SmashTest samples still look semi-gloss! Goal is to seal bare balsa, put decorations, seal it with a last coat. Wish me luck... Got this problem solved.... Now back to my Cox.049s.... Cheers, Dave'crosscheck'Fallowfield P.S. I have enough left in that 'Black Can' to try covering balsa with .75oz glass cloth... |

Re: Fuel proofing tests - all the results here Water based products will warp balsa if applied only to one side. If applied to a built up structure though the balsa is held in place and it's not really a problem. I have used water based contact cement to attach Sig Coverall, just brush it on the structure, let it dry and iron the covering on. Heat reactivates it. |

Re: Fuel proofing tests - all the results here Hi Micheal, I'll check if it is waterbased. (some smell, but that could be the propellant) I sprayed both sides of my 1/8th balsa sample. I going to wet sand it a bit for a 3rd coat... I'll spray one side of 1/32 balsa, and see what happens... Will let you know... Dave'crosscheck'Fallowfield |

Re: Fuel proofing tests - all the results here Quote:
I understand that Varathane Crystal Clear is a WATER BASED polyurethane...... was there any wood movement (bowing) from the water carrier on 1/8" thick balsa? ...... my experience with using a WB poly on 1/16" balsa sheeting was that the thinner sheeting would distort unless I used several extremely light/spit BRUSHED coats ..... it may also be that the with spraying the water carrier largely evaporates before the spray reaches the balsa. good discussion to continue, Michael |

Re: Fuel proofing tests - all the results here Hi Richard, Thanks to your advice, I spent $10+ on, Varathane Proffesional Crystal Clear, the black can. I bought Gloss, for the other job I was doing. Between coats, I sanded medium light balsa, to try it out. Sprayed it, wiped it into the grain, twice, let it dry for a week. Dusted with 220, same deal, let it dry for a week. Added 1Gram to 12 sq.in, of 1/8th balsa, with a nice gloss/sealed grain. Add another week for drying time, if you want. I have left raw 15% fuel on my samples... Still Shiney! Thanks to All , I learn from, Dave'crosscheck'Fallowfield |
