And, how was that after repair flight? I like not only the details but the sense of humor while describing it.

Thanks Kevin,

I'll be at the field tomorrow morning if the forecast holds! I'll be sure to report back afterwards.

Re: Hobbistar tail repair

It has been brought to my attention by a couple of fellow club members that it should be a little nose heavy in the centre of the range, so I have taken a few steps to accomplish that.

First, I added an extension to the battery tray so they could be moved forward.

With the batteries as far forward as they would go I put weights on the forward hatch until the plane was slightly nose down. It took 184 grams; here they are wrapped up and ready to screw onto the bottom of the hatch.

I added a plywood plate to the underside of the hatch to give the screws something to bite into.

Once it was all together, balance was just right - a little nose heavy at the centre of the range.

Just right.

Rudder repair covered.

After I reconnected all of the linkages I balanced and installed the new propeller.

Time to put it on the balancer. I was very surprised to find it only slightly tail heavy in the middle of the CG range...

And slightly nose heavy at the rear of the CG range.

So ends the repair! I'll report back after my next flights.

Here's the piece for the top of the fuselage around the vertical stabilizer.

Taking my time with the trim iron it went on quite well. After extending the stripes on both sides I was done covering the tail repair. It passes the 50/50 test - looks perfect 50 feet away at 50 mph.

In the crash, the rudder extension and a chunk of the original rudder broke off.

I was able to separate the original piece from the extension and glue it in again. I considered a plywood doubler but the cabinetmaker's glue I use forms a bond stronger than the wood.

Next time in the shop I'll cover the rudder repair.

The lower half is done - on to the upper half.

Here's the starboard upper section...

And port.

Next step is to cover the top around the vertical stab.

Re: Hobbistar tail repair

If I spend a lot of time thinking about something I could have done better I'll usually go back and re-do it. I'm not a master at covering and I don't expect perfection but I do have standards, and this didn't meet them.

After mulling it over for a day I went back and cut out the offending section.

That's better.

Re: Hobbistar tail repair

Yesterday I learned that you can make a perfectly good iron sock from an old cotton t-shirt.

Not especially appealing from the back...

But perfectly functional on the front.

One shirt will yield at least a dozen socks, which are $4.49 at the LHS. Suddenly my old cotton shirts got a lot more valuable!
