Re: Priming a Walbro carb

On my dle motors the first start of the day is a pain like that. The rest of the day couple flips with choke on and they pop lol. With my eme 60 it can sit for two months and with choke on (hole not soldered) full throttle maybe 10 flips and it pops couple more with choke off and it's running lol. And that's a way cheaper motor but more reliable starting

Re: Priming a Walbro carb

Perhaps tell us your procedure that you are using to prime and start and we can comment.

With my two DLE 55's (side exhaust version), plane is well restainted -
I have ignition on, choke fully closed (choke plate hole soldered over), full throttle,
flip - flip, flip until the engine barks, open choke, throttle down to idle, three to five more flips then the engine fires off.

Note: on one DLE 55 about 12 to 20 flips on choke all is needed, on the other DLE 55, almost 50 flips are needed - go figure!

Re: Priming a Walbro carb

If you can access the carb use a fuel bulb or can to squirt some fuel in the carb then Choke it with ign on helps get things rolling with the first start of the day. Old mr hunter taught me that one for the stubren motors

Re: Priming a Walbro carb

I just read that to prime a dry Walbro carb so it will pump, remove both the high and low speed needles and inject fuel into the body through the holes. Tried this and the carb primed immediately.

Hope this helps for others with this problem with new engines.

Aside from comments re choke on-off etc have you checked your needle settings against normal spec's - I see you said new engine - I assume that the needles are likely factory set, but if that low end needle is screwed too far in you will have trouble getting fuel into the carb. Worth checking before you flip yourself crazy.

Re: Priming a Walbro carb

Something you can try to get a little better fuel suction is plugging the hole in the choke plate. I did it with solder, but some do it with a screw or jb weld, etc.

Mine normally takes a couple flips to pop with choke closed and throttle open. A couple more flips with throttle at idle and choke open and away I go.

Re: Priming a Walbro carb

Same as with alan's info, I would add, shorter fuel hose to carb for quicker fuel suction( if you can). I would start with choke close, ignition on, flip (ave. 3-5) till it fires then dies which mean there is now fuel, open choke and flip again with ignition still on (hi-idle on trim),once it starts, I usually let it hi idle for about 1-2 mins before flying. This works for both my DLE 50 and 55.

Re: Priming a Walbro carb

Choke on, ignition off, throttle to full, 5 - 10 brisk flips, choke open, 2 - 3 brisk flips, throttle to idle, ignition on, 1 -2 flips and it will start.

Re: Priming a Walbro carb

All plumbing is correct? Pick up has a clunk, breather tube open, choke closed and half throttle, should take about 10 flips before it pops.

Priming a Walbro carb

My new DLE 55 ra carb isn't drawing fuel from the tank when I attempt to start it for the first time. What is the best way to prime the carb so it will pump.
