Re: Lipo storage

Hey guys....

A little late to the party on this one...but I recently got back into RC's after 2+ years. Is it safe to say in our cold Edmonton winters of -20 to -30 is ok for lipo storage outside in my garage?

I've got 8 x 2S truggy lipos and 5 x 1S heli lipos that are currently in separate soft lipo bags, like these...

Can I just put all of these in a fire safe like the following...

Or is this a better choice...

And just keep them in the garage in our cold Canadian winters?

Thanks in advance!

Re: Lipo storage

Local Army Surplus stores have great prices on used ammo boxes that vary in sizes and are great for LiPo storage and/or transporting LiPos.

Good idea. I've hit a roadblock for making/cutting the sheet metal in order to make the metal cubicles I wanted in my original idea. It can be done, but it will be very time consuming. This idea seems a lot simpler. Anyone have suggestions for larger concrete clocks? I have a lot of large batteries that will need quite a few regular sized cinder blocks if that is the way I decide to go.

Re: Lipo storage

I find I can tie up my chargers for hours trying to get them down to storage charge and my two 12V irons do the job in around 30 minutes. Sometimes I actually have some soldering to do as well.

Re: Lipo storage

Fire safety is a big concern for me, since i have a large collection of batteries.

I'm personally thinking of building a proper storage vault for my lipos, made of heavy guage steel with separate bays for various battery sizes, and having it vented to the outside so that in the event of a fire, will activate an exhaust fan to purge the fumes from the vault.

vault will be approx 3' x3' divided into cubicles, with metal doors and an enclosed charging station below.

i plan on doing a build thread when i get to working on it. Maybe this winter.

Re: Lipo storage

Yes the metal container looks like a move in the right direction. The reason I feel concerned about lipos is last summer I met an old friend who had a lipo fire in his shed. Lucky he was home and put it out quickly after noticing the smoke. Battery was in good shape without a clue of the fire origin (but most likely a puncture). I hope technology will bring us a less volatile source of energy in the futur. I understand there is a weight concern but better shock protection like camera or laptop batteries for instance?

Re: Lipo storage

I store my lipos in a fireproof safe for home use in my workshop in the basement. Different sizes and the price is right. Bought mine at Walmart.

The other lipos don't even appear to have heat damage...the covering, connectors and wire insulation don't look melted.

In any case, what the picture shows is that storing them in a box is very effective.
I really don't have all the circumstances details. However, from personal experience, it appears that the lower the pack voltage the less volatile the pack seems to be. So, if the pack that went up wasn't fully charged, or was at storage voltage, or at minimum "after flying" voltage, the burn may not have been as intense.
