Don't worry about the message, I'm going to swing by either way to check out the store!

I haven't gone yet but I did call them. They have a basement set up that they use for both on & off road. They said they are switching to drifting this month. Saturday they have club members but Sunday is open to anyone.

I'll give them one more call to confirm the switch over and the cost. I can message you once I get word.

I haven't been there, do they have a track? I should be around and could be convinced to stop by!

That is a sweet ride.

I hear you on the stock set-up. When I first built mine I had it close to 0 toe and camber. It gave me nice long sweeping drifts in the showroom. But I like having the car ride squirrelly with toe out 0 camber in the front and full camber in on the rear. Now I can do tight turns by tapping the throttle.

I'm heading out to Xtreme RC in Oshawa next Sunday. Have you been out there?

Yeah, the M3 is a TT01ED. I'm just running the stock alignment settings, didn't need to loosen up the rear at all.

Re: Tamiya TT01 diff lock. What's your take?

Thanks wparsons,

Is that your BMW TT01ED?

The grease really did do the trick. I also held down one of the front wheels while running the car to work in the front differential grease. Cambered the rear wheels as much as I could to get the rear to kick out.

The body in my pic is has been retired. Practicing my drifting in tight areas did a number to it. My second FR-S body is all white with decals all around it. I also added lights to the body but I am working on the turn signals.

The FR-S is awesome fun. Personally I think it's easier to drift than the RC version.

I was going to suggest the extra grease, that's what I did with my TT01 as well and it drifts great!

Good choice on the body, I've got a full size one

Here's my TT01:

Re: Tamiya TT01 diff lock. What's your take?

I got my drift car up and running and I am amazed at how well it turned out. I started with a stock set-up (not locking the rear diff) and practiced for a couple of days with a homemade track I set-up in the living room.

After bumping around, finally got the swing of drifting my car and I started to wonder how could I drift into tighter corners. The car would perform long sweeping drifts and I would tap the brake for a tighter turn. I was able to get close but not with consistency.

So I caved. When building I noticed that the differential grease the kit came with was really thick so I went to my local hobby shop to pick up another one. It's not cheep so I bough only one. I opened up the rear diff and packed it with Tamiya grease then tested the car.

Ran the car and wow what a difference. The grease is so thick it virtually locked the rear diff. The car is so much sharper and I was able to run it through my little course I made without tapping the brake.

I would recommend getting some extra diff grease from Tamiya and try it yourself. It makes a noticeable difference in drifting character.

Cheers

Re: Tamiya TT01 diff lock. What's your take?

This is my first Tamiya kit and man is it amazing! I love the details, the clear instructions and that the kit came will mostly everything I needed. The only thing I wish it came with was more differential grease.

After reading more about locking rear diffs I decided to not mess around and start off stock.

The mechanical seems very straight forward but I'm really interested in painting the body.

Maybe I should move this conversation to a different post?...

Re: Tamiya TT01 diff lock. What's your take?

Thank you Gordon and I will PM you when I have the car built.

Origanlly I was thinking along the same lines but after reading about the Tamiya 540 brushed motor I started to think that it might need some help via front one way or locked rear diff.

Maybe I will build it as a stock drift car, run it and take it from there. If anyone has experience with the TT01D Type E running it with and without the mods I still would like to hear about it.

Cheers!
