Re: On board glow igniter suggestions

I have had the Mcdaniels for 4 years now in my TF 60 size saito 125 powered P51. Great unit and has worked well other then the wire braking off the plug cap twice. I now just use a wheel collar and bare end of wire on the glow plug, been fine for the past 2 years that way. This year after cycling the battery I found the 5000 ma/h nimh was now putting out just over 3000 ma/h. One thing I would consider again is a unit with a separate battery, one I could replace without replacing the whole unit. Using a life pack would be at the top of my list as well.

If the engine idles reliably and you aren't worried about it quitting, consider a simple remote glow hook up. I have an OS 1.20 pumper on my DR-I. I used a remote glow system. There is a socket in the cockpit where the glow driver plugs in. No holes in the cowl and the socket out of sight in the cockpit.
It's simple. The glow driver connects to a wire with a RCA plug on the other end. The RCA jack plugs into the socket in the cockpit. I start the engine, remove the glow and fly.
That engine does idle down very nicely and keeps idling. It is mounted 90 degrees instead of inverted too.
I also have the same system on my Sopwith pup. It's running a Magnum .52 four stroke that is mounted 90 degrees too.

Re: On board glow igniter suggestions

I designed and built a glow driver that senses the temperature of the glow element and applies power when needed. If you wish to build your own, PM me and I will send you the details.

Hi Mike:
http://www.hansenhobbies.com/product...cc/ers/nersv2/

Here's a link to Hansen Hobbies (in US) where their latest version is an electronic switch for about $12. It handles a wide voltage range to be controlled from your receiver and uses a SEPARATE cell for glow power. It handles up to 4 Amps which is decent for a Glow Plug when they only need about 1.5 to 2 amps. If you buy more they get cheaper and I think their shipping costs are still decent.

They used to have kits, but not for this item. I've made my own from schematics on the internet etc.... and I've also used the Sullivan unit which works very well ( settable on your throttle channel or a separate switch from the Tx). With a $12 price I won't make many more once my "parts supply" runs out.

I first started using them for starting and low idling on Saito 4 stroke 72, 91 & 125 engines because they were still new and there's nothing worse than thinking it might not idle well when landing a scale model. As my engine tuning got a bit better, the idles were more reliable so I would just use them for the convenience of starting engines ------ especially if the plugs are "buried" in the cowl.

Hope all these replies/comments have helped direct you to what you need.

Another great feature is that if you dont hear the beep, could mean your glow plug is dead, so easy way to tell you may need to change your glowplug. Dont have to think about anything, dont need to worry about extra charged stuff. The company has great support. Brand new they are about $70 shipped. I actually have a bearly used one for sale in the engine section, its an extra one I am not currently using.
There are a huge amount of helicopters running this system just as above with no issues. As stated above it is designed for starting mainly not as a mixture fixer for miss set idle / midrange mixtures.

Re: On board glow igniter suggestions

Thanks for all the responses fellow pilots. Although I agree with you Ramjet, probably not needed for Saito 4 stroke I am looking for hassle free start ups more than anything. I have an inverted os91 in my jug and find it to be a royal pain in the butt using the glow stick and not to mention one less hole in the cowl.
Pretty sure I will install onboard glow system as a few extra ounces will not hurt as the Saito 125 is the largest engine suggested for this arf. Should be tons of power.
Once again thanks to all that posted, now to decide which brand. And I think a desperate battery is the best way to go as well.

I have used 42% products on board glow.Has worked well for me you can set it to come on and off at different throttle settings.I had mine set so it would go off around half throttle it comes with its own battery has lifetime guarantee.Thunderbolt R/C carries this line.

Re: On board glow igniter suggestions

not needed on a 4 cycle . you will add extra weight that is not needed on a war bird .if you know what you are doing the only way that motor will quit is if the fuel runs out.I tried a a onboard glow once but found it changes the amount of fuel needed for the engine to Idle, this causes a problem in it's self . if the motor is setup to run correctly with the glow on the engine will be to lean to run if the glow driver dies .In fact you would just be making things more complex then needed.IMO you are more likely to have a flame out with the on board glow. McDanials works the same way Gary and yes a separate battery supply is a must.
