Re: Unionville Norseman Build

if your thinking of returning to Gimli, may I suggest you try to get there during Modelfest, it's the NW Ont/ Mb zone event and is a great time.

Re: Unionville Norseman Build

Hey guys, I really enjoyed reading this thread. I'm new to "scratch" building and R/C planes, but have always had cars, trucks, buggies, ect.

I stumbled upon this thread while looking for a Norseman kit to build over the winter, and was pleased to see how very well written it was, and I thank you for taking the time to blog your build.

What I found was a great trip down memory lane. My father grew up in Balmertown, and as a child I spent every summer in Red Lake Ontario with my parents and many family members that still live there. Most of them still work at Campbell mines to this day. I have attended many Norseman Day festivals, and this is the reason I want to build this model.

Although I haven't been to Red Lake in many years, my wife and I are planning a trip up there in the coming years to visit some relatives, and of course, re living the Norseman festival.

I also found that I, like many of you have family and freinds in many of the same places, and as a boy growing up in Scarborough Ontario in the early 90's, Its hard for me to realize that people out there even know such places exist.

My Grandparents were originally from Gimli Manitoba, and moved to Red Lake as my Grandfather was a blacksmith and found work at the mines, eventually they moved back to Gimli and spent their retirement there. Although they passed away a couple of years ago, it was nice to reminisce about the summers I spent both in Red Lake and in Gimli as a child, and one day hope to relive those moments with my children.

Thank you so much for the inspiration and the memories and emotions this build thread has brought me, and to all of the other posters for their input and insight, and hopefully I will get to see this beautiful plane in Red Lake one day soon

Sincerely,

James Schnerch

Re: Unionville Norseman Build

Hi Trev, you missed a good fun fly here in Dryden, and I am all packed to go to Rainy River this weekend, and I hope to get to T Bay for the fun fly there in 2 weeks, but not positive yet.

Our Float fly is coming yo fast, Aug 7-8 and then I'm off to Gimli!

We still fly 72 Mhz all the time, so if we were to ban it there wouldn't be a lot of planes flying around here, so don't worry.

see you soon...

Hey Bill,

Yeah, thanks for that....it rained all weekend here No matter, me and the kidlets had fun anyway.

Actually I am shooting to attend Bonny Bay. You guys always look like you're having too much fun. Fingers crossed but hopefully I can bring my hat and Dirty Rotten Dog will show up with some floats on

You still allow 72Mhz?

Are you coming down for our July Fun Fly?

Re: Unionville Norseman Build

Hey Jim,

Sorry to hear about your mother-in-law. I know the stress that can cause. I'm sure your family appreciates your support

It's reassuring to hear that mine's not the only Unionville Norseman that needs the elevator trimmed down. Once the floats are on, I might experiment with a little extra weight (in the tips of the floats). I agree that it should fly very nicely with floats; it seems so light on the wing with wheels.

I use the struts....they're just the ugly old 1/4" woodies as specified in the kit. Like you said, I wouldn't dare fly or even taxi without them. I'm even a little nervous about flying it inverted until I get something a little more substantial (and supported near the middle too).

I know....cough, cough, Norsemans aren't supposed to be flown inverted.

I've been trying to get around to building a nice set of struts like yours, but other chores keep getting in the way; ie. FLOATS, lol.

I'll likely be in Red Lake the year after too. The RC event is becoming quite an attraction. I'm sure that Chimo would really appreciate seeing your plane there!

Re: Unionville Norseman Build

Glad to hear you got it flying.
I also have to trim in some down elevator, but not too much, with the CG per factory spec. I've been flying it this way for 4 years with no trouble.

I used a reversing Y-harness for the flaps which works real good. I always use about 1/2 flaps for both takeoff and landing. Full flaps are OK but it requires a fair amount of power on for landing, otherwise it drops like a rock. Its such a great flyer on floats that I never have put the wheels back on after the maiden flight.

I can't beleive you have flown it without wing struts! The wing spars are so light I thought the struts were fully functional and required? Maybe you beefed up your wings? I used aluminum streamline tubing, reinforced inside with a hardwood dowel, for my wing struts. Looks much better than the 1/4" dowel struts that come with the kit.

I was planning on going to the Norseman festival this year, but my mother-n-law just had some serious health problems and we need to find a care center for her so I probably won't make it this year. Hopefully next year.

Let us know how your float build and setup goes.

Re: Unionville Norseman Build

Hi Jim,

The Norseman's doing fine I've had her out flying a bit. It flys very nice but requires an bit of down elevator to stay level. I'm still working on figuring out if it needs more nose weight, or if the stab should be given positive incidence. Its static balance is right on spec.

The flaps also deploy at a different rate. I haven't quite figured that one out yet. It's possible the latency of my 9Z is causing the flaps to deploy at a different rate. I should be able to assign adjacent channels ie. 5&6 to get rid of most of that, or I might just put a reversing Y-harness in.

Running the inverted Saito was a bit of a challenge until I realized its trouble was that the idle mixture was slobbering rich from the factory. It would barely idle, coughed fuel all over the place, and often flamed out at low RPM. I leaned her out a little and she runs like a dream now.

I'm currently working on the MR Aerodesign floats. Maybe I'll get the wing struts done before July also.

Yes, I intend to be in Red Lake for Norseman Days this year. Are you????

Thanks for the continued interest. I will post some more pictures as it progresses to final completion.

Re: Unionville Norseman Build

Hey Trevor,

Haven't seen a post for quite some time.
Just wondering how you are doing on that Norseman.
Also, will you be going to the Norseman Festival in Red Lake this year?

Jim
