Re: Unionville Tiger Moth

Great looking Moth! The Unionville kits are great flying models! 12' Beaver on the build schedule for this winter......

Bill:

This is a very nice Tiger Moth. I built the same Unionville Tiger Moth for my son a couple of years ago (this one was all yellow). They fly beautifully, and with a little power, can do all the stunts that the full-sized Moth was capable of. Although my son lives in Alberta and is very active with RC in the Edmonton area, we do get to fly together once in a while. Enjoy your Moth.

Unionville Tiger Moth maiden...yahoo!

Dunno it this thread is still active but had such a good time with the maiden flight of my DAD's (at nearly 90, he built it!) Unionville Tiger Moth I just had to try to post.
Flew the model last night as the weather was perfect...wind about 3 kph straight down the club field and...the grass had just been cut! Perfect!
The model has been complete for over a year and just waiting for the right conditions to present when I could get to the field. It was worth the wait!
My dad trained with the RAF in Scotland during WWII on...you guessed it deHavilland Tiger Moth! The colour scheme on dad's model is the same as the trainers were painted when he flew them in 1941-1942.
Motor is a Rimfire 32 powered by a 5000mah 4s battery.
Taxiing was pretty routine on the freshly cut grass and take-off was a non event...no nose-overs, no rocketship climb, just a gentle slow rise off the grass.
NO CLICKS of trim required!
All too soon we were landing which went well too, scale roll-out and no nose-over! Well...roll to a stop, tail up...and down. (does that count?)
Sorry no in the air photos...yet
Will re-post when the model is prettied up!

Re: Unionville Tiger Moth

Good to see everyone is finished and flying. I have been flying mine for two seasons now with the OS .40 FS and its a fun Sunday flier if there's no strong wind. Since I built the moth, I have finished a 1/4 scale Sig Clipped Wing, a Pica 1/5 scale Cessna 182, an Astro Hog and a Four-Star 60, all by Sig. This winter's builds include a Balsa USA Tri-Plane, a 1/5 scale Stinson SR8, a Unionville Norseman and some re-build odds and ends including a scratch-built Fokker D7 and a Dave Platte Focke Wulfe. I guess you would say I love to build.

Great pics Rob,

That Pup is a real beauty! I am also flying the little Electrifly Camel now...what fun it is too!

I just love Biplanes!!!

Here is a photo as well of an Eindecker we Electrified this Spring. Balsa USA 80" Kit. Flies great for a 9 1/2 lb plane!

Cheers,

Steve

Re: Unionville Tiger Moth

Had a blast this morning, takeoffs are still a bit squirrely, but decided on trying high rates as well for next takeoff and landings, that should get it in the air a bit quicker before it gets too loose. Did a bit of setup with timer running and ended up with 17 minutes total time. I've got the batt on charge right now so will know soon about how much i burnt off.
I had it trimmed out into a nice lazy orbit about 150' up and actually walked back to the truck, fished out my camera from the flight bag and snapped a couple of airborne photos! Posted one here, not very discernable at that altitude but absolutely hilarious! cant get away with that with my other machines!
Have included a pic of my 1/4 scale pup as well just so you can see how it all turned out.
cheers
Rob

Re: Unionville Tiger Moth

hey Rob,

I am using a 14x7E at present, since it just would not fly nice with a 12x8. The 13x7 was pretty good, but the 14x7 gave me 530 watts at full throttle and 200 watts at half throttle....which was just perfect for hauling around 5 1/2 lbs. (remember mine is a gasser conversion, built like a brick!). It sounds much healthier with the big 14x7 too, not laboring to get airborne at all. Rolls off in about 15-20 ft

I have not measured my wing incidences either. I do know the CofG was really critical and too far back on my first flights.

Take offs are really straight forward, just slowly to full throttle and keep it right. I learned that I need to always take-off and land on full rate.

Slow flight is really fun eh? I can get almost 30 minutes on a charge doing slow flight.

After Hobbyzone/Parkzone gear, this is really sweet especially in a bit of wind. No Problem.

I look forward to hearing more!

Re: Unionville Tiger Moth

Hey Steve,
Ill do a better job of logging my flight time tomorrow, but todays flight, with a little setup tweaking and 2 botched takeoffs...(I'm still used to the full scale tigermoths and chipmunks of which you need to feed in left rudder on takeoff as the gipsy majors turn opposite of north american engines!) I used up my timer that was set for 13 minutes on my dx6i for doing scale aerobatics with my t34. I have the batt i used on charge right now, so will update you in the am with how many mah i had to put back in.
I'm using a stock eflite power25 with 40 amp esc and a 3s 3200 battery.
I'm seriously considering floats for it once i get more comfortable with it. It just seems to stooge around at next to zero throttle. I too have the goofy nose up attitude on the downwind legs, mainly because it just wants to keep flying regardless of how little throttle i've got in her.
I know previously in this thread there were incidence questions and mine is sitting at .5deg top wing and just under 2deg lower. I just went with as close to zero on the top as i could without being too ---- and tried to keep it within 2 degrees differential.
What prop are you using? I'm running a spare apc 12x8 on it right now, but am thinking of going 13"...dont know if i want to go any finer in pitch, as this thing's slow enough...and wont quit climbing!
anyway will chat after tomorrow ams flights.
cheers
Rob.
ps..will take a couple of static shots just so you can see the scaleish landing gear.

It weighed in at 4.75 lbs, with 6oz of nose weight added..no getting around that with a bipe.
Will try to get wifey out to take pics at some point.
I had the l/g at the scale position initially, but had to move it forward again as it kept nosing over, but i can live with it where it is. I also got the 1/7th scale gear from Hobby Lobby which works and looks very good...don't know if i'd want it on a much heavier machine though.

How's everybody else doing with theirs? Ace...Steevo?

The Eflite Power 25 is tonnes of punch as i was puttering along at 1/4 - 1/2 stick the whole time...even on t/o. Hmmm...always wanted to put it on floats and skis initially...any float suggestions?

It took a backseat to the pup and T34 the last couple of months, but had i known how much fun it was i would have finished it earlier!

Pull Pulls work great as well..nice and positive

Cheers
What battery/prop are you using? I am curious of your flight times too?

Cheers,

Steve

Re: Unionville Tiger Moth

Good to hear Rob!
...and about time too- LOL

I have about 50 flights on mine now and just love it. Its such an easy and scale looking bird too. I am at 5 1/2 lbs and no added lead weight, thanks to my forward battery location (through the firewall), Slow flight is nice at 1/2 throttle or less. I have a 14x7E APC prop on mine and get 20 minutes/charge.
It will speed climb at a nice 70 degree angle at full throttle if needed, and helps get me out of trouble.

It is my favorite plane to fly so far. I just added and electrifly Sopwith Camel to my fleet. Fun, but certainly not scale like the Unionville Moth.

Your lighter version should get you even more time/charge for sure...and even better performance envelope too. Looking forward to seeing some pics.

Cheers,

Steve
