That plane goes like stink now-can handle all types of wind. 3 channel mind you, but she moves. Good point - 2 planes for the same price as a parkflyer - but I enjoy having the bigger plane up in the air - more impressive, and more of a challenge.
I do agree that the bigger planes are more impressive in the air and they are nice to fly.

More challenging, fly a Sukhoi if you want challenging.
I needed a parkflyer to go with the micros. The Wildcat at $119.99 with the option of converting to a P51 Mustang for (airframe<$80) was very attractive to me. Where I fly, hand launching and belly landings are the way to go.

You'll crash. We all do. It's part of the learning process. Hopefully fewer as we get better. The cost to repair and the time it takes to get back to flying is what I factor in.

Exposed to Micros

I started with a Radian and then asked the same question.
What's the best trainer with ailerons to learn 4 ch flying?

The consensus was T28 Trojan and has a very loyal following. It's a great plane and a good choice.

Several flyers persuaded me to look at the micro UM-T28. I bought one and just love this plane.

The UM-T28 Trojan is:

A great 4 ch trainer and a good flyer (micros require fast reflexes)
At less than 2 ounces in weight, very crash worthy and fixable
Because of the micro size they go anywhere even on the motorcycle
Don't have to join or drive to a club and can fly in a very small area.
They start at $100 and they can be upgraded with props and motors
Lipos are just ~$1.50 from HK so you can have 10 for the price of a 2200 mah lipo
Wind can be a negative as with any trainer, but I now like winds up to 10 kpm.

I loved the UM-T28 so much I bought a micro Sukhoi 26XP. If you can fly this you can fly almost anything. Shares all of the same parts as the UM-T28 including Lipos. So for $200 you now have 2 planes.

I decided I a need one Parkflyer to supplement the micros and just bought a PKZ Wildcat F4F for $119.99.
The F4F has all of the components as the P51 (cost $179.99) including rudder controls which are optional on the P51. You can buy a P51 airframe for ~$75 and when your tired of the Wildcat or it beyond repair you move the components and you now have a P51 Mustang.

Re: Supercub to Warbird - which one?

Since I already have an air compressor, I just picked up an inexpensive single action air brush. For foam, I use water based acrylic craft paint (Wal-Mart, Michaels)thinned with washer fluid. Yup, the blue stuff. The 'detergents' help the paint flow.

I have to agree with the others. The paint does not adhere particularly well to foam. Surface prep is key to get the best bond possible. That means a thorough cleaning with rubbing alcohol. Then only handle the model with rubber gloves to keep body oils off.

As for masking, I've always had issues with paint lifting. I recently picked up some 'frog tape' from Home Depot, haven't tried it yet though.

Re: Supercub to Warbird - which one?

From what I've read, the PZ foam is quite tolerant towards spray can paint. I've been working on painting my Super Cub in fact, and I can tell you the Krylon Fusion and their new "Dual Coat" spray paints don't attack the foam.

A bigger problem seems to be masking. Pretty much anything that will stick, will lift paint from the foam. I even tried modelling clay. Have read of a technique using wet paper, but have not tried it yet.

If you are moving up to 4 channels : I would suggest that maybe keep the white and whatever trim and fly it until comfortable and then maybe use a camo paint then.

Re: Supercub to Warbird - which one?

Well I'll be researching that myself, but I intend to do it with spray bombs & torn paper masks. If we were back in my scratch building days when I covered most things with silk & dope I'd use automotive paint but they've banned the paints I've been using & I don't expect to do much with the new replacements. From what I've read & the few spray bombs I've used (Home Hardware) Parkzone's foam is reasonably tolerant. I have some of their packaging foam for test sprays.

Re: Supercub to Warbird - which one?

That's a real change to it's looks too. A quick search for T 28 information brings up many links with all sorts of different schemes, and for me personally I like the one I posted, (colours wise) but that's the beauty about having something "your way". Just because it comes out of the box painted & covered in decals doesn't mean we can't change it.

Stegl, ya, I want to move up to a 4 ch for the next plane....

Coicopo, ya, I really think I need to change the paint scheme on it. Similar to what pointed out to me, check this out. Pretty much the same, but more subtle.. Not so much brown, more grey, but that desert look.

Trojan seems to make sense, good stable flyer and can take a bit of a beating, although I've never crashed my super cub from it's first flight...
