Re: Caribou/ Buffalo

Buffalo has not been flown since our Funfly. I took it to the field last night, but it was way windy for flying.
144" WOW, way out of my league, but it would be cool.
A fellow flyer is working on a 96" Caribou, but it will be awhile to complete. I don't know if he's thinking about offering plans.
I'm preparing for my trip to Alberta now, doubt if I'll have time to try again, we'll see. If not it will fly at Kitchener Sept 8/9.12 flytwice

I did get the Buffalo outside today! Still not quite finished, have to install the decal windows and cabin glass. Also need velcro for main battery.
Then I'll rip out the 72mhz Rx, and install/ setup the 2.4.
Here's today pics! flytwice

Nice Buffalo! My buddy used to work at ASC on the buffalos.

Re: Caribou/ Buffalo

I'm not sure if someone already mentioned, but John La Belle is creating a 144" Caribou I believe. He has put pics on RCU on one of the build threads that someone has for his 1/6 Twin Otter. www.johnsplansandkits.com if you want to try emailing him on the status of the Caribou.

Do you mean they cannot supply? I can believe that as those plans are about 25 years old.
I had a set of those plans at one time and foolishly got rid of them. Regret it now.
ditto!

Re: Caribou/ Buffalo

Doug,It isnt as complicated as it seems,to use modelling programs.I always start at the same place...I get images jpegs, and pdfs to outline the plane I want, then scale those images to suit.I trace the outlines of parts that I want, and then start creating parts. There has always been a debate on how to arrive at the end plan, and it is dictated by what technology you plan to use to cut the model.Stick built planes can be more easily created using solid models (3D),while laser cut parts are more optimally created using line drawn files.I usually make both forms of my model, before I get carried down one form of construction.Keep in mind,it almost takes as long to do a proper plan,as it would to build one from scratch. The only advantage is you get to insert the many available components, before actually using them.ALex

Re: Caribou/ Buffalo

Thanks Jim: Maybe thats a big part of building rc aircraft, its almost like having a kid!! hehe. Certainly, after spending several hundred hours on the ebnch, the anxiety is there. And the joy when it finally takes to the air. flytwice

Re: Caribou/ Buffalo

We managed to get another flight on the BUffalo at the Funfly. I say we, because again I asked Rob to fly it for the crowd. It was really windy, I was a little too nervous. It flew very well, other than needing input at all times (reverse aileron to hold a turn), Rob said it flys very stable, no nasty quirks. His landing was picture book against a very stiff headwind, looked very cool! Thanks Rob
So weather permitting, I will take her up this Tues night. flytwice

Re: Caribou/ Buffalo

HI Alex: Wow, you could drive a bus on that!! Hehe. IMO, its plenty strong.
it must be nice to be computer literate, and able to use these programs to design. Very nice!! A lot of work too, I'll bet. Can't wait to see the build begin. flytwice
