Low cost glow plane but you need something that has lots of power.
The plane needs to to hover at less then 1/2 power.
Aeroworks sell those small glow or 23cc planes were the fews is thin.
Invest some money in a 3d machine so it can be easier to learn then try it on
Other machines.
It makes a big difference which aircraft you are trying to 3d on.

Agree. You will be surprised how better you are at hovering when you get your plane low and close to you, unless you have a GIANT plane. I often hear people suggest to learn hovering at the height of 3-4 mistakes. I don't think that's good advice.

The easiest 3D plane to hover is a profile foamie. It may be counter-intuitive, but hoving low actually causes less damage if you cannot hold and crash.

Dont bother with gyros,

I have seen a few people put them into planes and after all kinds of setup and tweaking they work OK but you half to make sure you turn it on and off at the right times. Plus when someone says hey fly my plane and you cant do anything you normally do then you will look like a bit of a laugh.

I learned with SIM, foamys and practice. Anyone can including you!

Plus, think about it, using a gyro is just cheating, you may as well put a full computer on it and hover it while you have a drink and watch the show. If your gonna fly 3d, do it yourself, if you wanna rely on technology then are you really the one flying?

I personally have heard people say they will help you get started and although this statement is somewhat true it really is not. If you use gyros it is easy, minor corrections and the like you will get comfortable. Then eventually you WILL take them out. (you decide, people wonder why you have them, you get better) Then when you do maneuvers where the gyro helped you all of a sudden your comfort level goes way down and you half to relearn.

I know a guy who was decent at hovering, he added gyros and after a year he could not do it without it.

Its like cars that park themselves. Everyone has to park a car when they learn to drive but if your car does it for you in 10 years will you be able to park your buddys car?

You become dependent of a piece of equipment and when it is gone your worse off then when you started.

Burn fuel and hover without aid. It really isn't as bad as you may think.

Hope this helps and its just my $0.02

Take care and happy hovering!

Re: Gyro information, Please help

Maybe putting a couple of gyros on this thing is not such a bad idea. Can I make it hover with gyros?

The HK GY401b will work just fine for you. In fact it's probably more gyro than you need. If you're putting it on an airplane, you want to use it in rate mode - not heading hold, so even a little telebee piezo crap gyro will do the job.

As a heli guy, I couldn't tell the difference between the GY401, and HK GY401b. They both perform identically as far as my thumbs are concerned. That said, if you do get the 401b, open it up, and hot glue the circuit board to the casing. It breaks off after a little while with vibration and the gyro will become unpredictable if you don't.

Also - you'll need two gyros at least if you want it to hover for you. One for yaw (rudder), and one for pitch (elevator). One gyro will only work on ONE axis. You might also want one for aileron too. If you do it'll hover almost hands off.

That's the problem. As others have said it will not teach you how to react to keep the nose up or when things go wrong. imo - save your money and just do it up high. If you bork it up, then just recover and try again.

That is unless you just want to see your airplane hover, and don't really care whether it's you or the gyro doing it. If you don't care, then just have at it. It's all about the fun!

Re: Gyro information, Please help

yeah, save the gyro money.... spend it on fuel and even more importantly a simulator.

Hover the sim until the control inputs are second nature....... then start trying to hover your real planes close enough to see.

Even if you COULD get a gyro to hover for you (and I kind of doubt that it would work very well) would a gyro know the control inputs to save your plane as it falls out of a hover and heads for the ground, inverted/knife edge.

Re: Gyro information, Please help

I don't think the gyro is a good tool to actually learn how to hover an airplane.

I think that the answer lies in the bottom of your gas can

UHM a Gyro and Aerobatics do not match.. You do NOT what an aerobatic airplane to be stable it needs to be unstable and hence no gyros in aerobatic aircraft . After all they are for Helis NOT Aerobatic aircraft....NUFF SAID!

Re: Gyro information, Please help

The HK gyro is OK, I have used them before, but I find the futaba 401 works really well, spend the extra money for the real thing if expensive plane, if cheap plane, the cheap gyro is OK...I have bench tested both and the 401 does respond better and I find is more accurate
