Re: 450 size Eurocopter build

I got it this time thanks Max. Do you have any video of it in flight?

With the original frame, it flew like a doll.

When I swapped out the frame for another one, it flew like crap. The problem turned out to be TR effectiveness due to lower RPM I had on the heli. Once RPM was raised and longer tail blades were used, problem went away
Max I tried to get your build thread but it said I don't have permission.
Hey Jim. Try it again. It should work now

That's looking good. A few more days at the chassis and it should be ready for final mounting. Keep it up.

Re: 450 size Eurocopter build

I'ts been a long time since I've done a post on this one so I plan on being a little more proactive about it. The pictures you see are where my heli is at right now, so far all the servos are mounted in their final place. The four blade head is on and adjusted and I've gone over it for loctiting and loose parts which by the way there wasn't many so I'm happy about that. The four blade tail rotor is still in the package and there it will stay until it's time, the reason for that is there are so many tiny parts that it's safer to leave it bagged for now. Earlier I had a post where I said my Hughes flys better than my boom and pod more stable and all, it was pointed out by Max that mass has a lot to do with it so with that in mind I decided not to drill holes in the airframe for less weight. With this heli the bulk of the weight is below the main rotor and CG and I'm thinking it will help with scale flying which is my goal. I have a ZYX FBL system coming from HK because I can figure that one out and have had some good luck with those, I'm not going to give up on that one I will get it working. Keyrigger Don was saying his Hughes defender flys great even though it's a porker (love that term) and that is one heli with a lot of mass. Because of his posts I think I will concentrate a little more on detail and hence add some mass, not too much though, no more than I have to. I will put a light system I got from great hobbies and set it up the way it says on the instructions. When it comes to the lights I will make sure it has lights on the skids because when flying the skids are one of my main reference points.

Re: 450 size Eurocopter build

I have the servos in the right places they work the way they should I don't have any linkage hooked up because I want to get the hang of setting up the electronics. I followed the set up to aileron limit but once there all setting up stops I must be doing something wrong so I'll try again tomorrow. Once I get the electronics to work I'll make the mechanical adjustment and then reset everything , very painful learning new electronic gadgets.

Re: 450 size Eurocopter build

I have not had any trouble setting up the 3G systems that I have and have installed over the past couple of years. I would completely start from scratch and take some measurements from the Align 450 Pro 3G Super Combo manual online, and set your servos up with the measurements they give you there. Follow that setup taking your individual servo locations into account, and it should work right the first time. Setting any flybarless gyro system is not a simple "plug in servos and it is ready to use". Not in this world. You must follow the setup exactly as they ask you and if something is not right, start over. Once you have done a dozen of them, they become very simple and logical to set up. You can fly without if you want but one thing you will learn to hate is wind if your setup is not perfect. It will balloon on you every time you turn into the wind. That is one thing that many that fly without don't like to tell you. Even one of the best scale flyers without estab is now installing them as he is not enjoying the flights like he thought he was. Take care.

Re: 450 size Eurocopter build

Drilled and mounted the servo/motor mount to the two main bearing blocks. Cut the areas out for the elevator and rudder servo, drilled and tapped all the servo mounting holes in the airframe. Installed the seros wired up the reciever and 3G FBL system and this is where the frustration starts. I bought the 3G used so maybe that is not a good idea to begin with but I'm going to try and set this thing up. I followed the instructions and it all seemed to go as indicated until it came to aileron settings all the right lights were on and I moved the stick like it says to but when I moved the sensor as instructed nothing happened . Before I went into the setup mode all servos worked in the direction they were supposed to but it appears that the sensor is not talking to the aileron servo in setup mode. Is it possible that a slight movement that I may have cause but bumping the table or heli could throw the setup mode off track? If I did bump it I wasn't aware of doing so and if this sensor is faulty then I just threw away more money and if it is faulty I may just setup this heli to run without the FBL. I think FBL systems are far more trouble than they are worth.

Re: 450 size Eurocopter build

Keeping an eye on this one. I'm interested to see the completed chassis. I used to work with metal and fit a lot of stuff by hand as that was what the job was. You can get a small block of wood and use it to level out machining and file marks. That little block was the most used piece of equipment next to my mill and lathe. You can make metal, especially aluminium, look like it is a brushed finish in no time. Hope this helps.

Re: 450 size Eurocopter build

Done the fitting of rotating parts and machined the tail boom mount. All parts line up with some adjustable parts unfortunately not all pieces could be made with my lathe or milling machine. If it looks like some parts are hand made it's because they are, some just won't line up with enough room to machine on my equipment. However the mounting surfaces are all milled so square will not be an issue heres some pics of the airframe in half so you can see how it all goes together. Next I will be mounting the servos and motor on the airframe but the reciever, gyro , battery , and 3G will be mounted on a tray inside the fuse. Had a good day spent about three hours in my workshop.

Re: 450 size Eurocopter build

The version I have is the Nightfly which has much brighter lights than the standard kit, or so they say on the web site. I barely use the original wires and have mostly used servo wire I bought in 10 ft. rolls. That wiring is nowhere near finished as there is a connector block that will be mounted near the front of the chassis that will have a 24 pin connector that will carry all canopy wiring, including the servos. I hope I have enough as I will need a few for lights in the cockpit, landing light, and instrument panel. I really hope the TOW sight control panel comes in soon as it will look really cool with a green glow coming out of the sight viewing screen. Take care.
