Offended???

Nope, I survived over 30 years in the Canadian Military - it takes a lot more than an off handed swipe at an ASP engine to upset me.

BUT!
Just for giggles - I have to tell the REST OF THE STORY about the ASP 46.

A buddy of mine heard my story about the ASP 53 and took pity on me...

He handed me a box of spare parts and told me that there should be a workable engine in there... an hour later I had assembled a VERY workable ASP 46 and I have logged over three hours on that engine in the last week!

I Stuck that 46 on my Sport Plane and it is a fantastic combination!

I just love a drawer full of spare parts.

Re: The Demise of an ASP 53

There are ALWAYS those out there that have an issue with a particular Make of Engine - BUT today; I have nothing but good things to say about the ASP brand!

I took an old ASP 46, mounted a 10 x 7 prop and had three stellar flights! From the get go it spun up to 12.5K and idled at 2.2K with no hesitation at all!

The only issue I had was in stopping the engine, I had to re-adjust the End Stop on my transmitter...

Now, if I can get another 12 years out of this engine I'll REALLY be happy!

Re: The Demise of an ASP 53

Just checked Hobbypartz and the .46 is $60.45 plus $10 shipping to Canada I think. Better deals on stuff now than 10 years ago. I picked up an AP .09 and .15 and the ASP .15. They are almost a gift now, and they go pretty good too except for idling. I don't think the little ones will go 10 years though.

Well, Bruce, now we know what was wrong with it. It surely did turn over strangely at the field.

Great that your engine had a long and productive life. In 1982, I bought an OS-FS90, the first 90 four stroke that OS made. It's still running and flying a Sig Astro Hog. I've had to replace the main bearings twice, but that's about it. Next year will be the engine's 30th birthday!

Re: The Demise of an ASP 53

That engine cost me about $100.00 in '99 - it lived until 2011... that is LESS than $10.00 a year for a whole lot of fun.

Although I am upset that it died... it had a long and fruitful life and I enjoied the 53 immensely!

I have replaced the ASP 53 with it's kid brother the ASP 46!
The ground testing was flawless!

Tommorrow I will give the 46 a flight test in the same AC that the 53 powered.

I am expecting nothing less than perfection!

Details to follow.

Re: The Demise of an ASP 53

12 years is pretty good though. Better than most Dodges I have ever had. ASP is better than it used to be though. Magnum is the same thing and they are fairly good. At least they have ball bearings and chrome plating on comparably priced OS stuff (not even comparable sometimes)
