Re: Sport / Trainer jet kits or plans

Guys, the AV8R is most definitley NOT a good plane for a kj66 based engine, as it was designed around a 54 sized turbine and will not take the weight.

Geoff, even with a less than 1:1 power to weight, a jet can be a blast to fly. My R54 can attest to that, as could my own home built jet powered by my old kj i built, until it hit a tree.

Even though the R54 is also designed around a 54 based engine, speaking to Bruce, he said some have successfully flown with a kj66 sized engine.

I have an old Boomer XL kicking around but it to big for a 18 lbs of blow,
I've flown one with a RAM 750..(around the same thrust range, maybe less) No problems, although we were flying from pavement...

I have an old Boomer XL kicking around but it to big for a 18 lbs of blow, I do know of an PST Reaction that need some small repair (flap fell apart). I believe it that a j66 in it. You may think building one would be fine but an airframe that you know the C G and all the setting will make the first flight a good one . Last time I talk to him he wanted about $400 for the airframe and you could drive to get it (no shipping and you could see it). sent me a "PM" or call me 519 786 3897 home. Brad "Maddog" Metcalf and I will find his phone # if you want it.

You could probably notch the trailing edge of the R54 without taking to much strength from the wing. The wing has two massive spars at approx 30 and 60% of chord that take flight loads. The wing is unbelieveably strong. I assume that's what the modeller did who mounted a P80.

It is based on a kj. The diameter is the problem. Mine is 4.25", k80 about 3.8" wrens and p70 smaller yet. I know it would be hard to fit into a built airframe but see some people fit k80's and one person fit a p80 which is even bigger. The turbine weighs about the same as a k80, think its going to have a little less thrust but burns more fuel. If I started with a set of plans am sure I could change it enough to fit.

Debating between the R54 and the Jetmach Supersport. The SS is about the same size and shape but the fuse can handle a p80. It has 2 part wings, can hold more fuel and already has intake ducts which I like the look of.

Thanks
Geoff

I would just phone Bruce at BTE and ask if the turbine will fit. The P70 is quite a bit bigger than the wren ss but we were able to make it fit by using a spacer on the mount and adding a relief in the point of the boat tail for the starter.

Re: Sport / Trainer jet kits or plans

Anyone have a set of Reaction 54 plans they would like to sell?

That would be deans second one with the p70 in it. It's a great airframe with the wren or a p70 in it, or any 18lber you will have a good time building it and even more fun abusing it just ask dean, cliff or Paul or me or anyone that has flown one it's a great no stress airframe.
