Re: Brushless Motor for a Summit

No needs to be left out. The Summit can backflip too.

Re: Brushless Motor for a Summit

Well, turns out my buddy wants to sell the Summit (less then a month old) and buy a E Revo Brushless and a Slash 4x4.

He has tried my Slash 4x4, and our friends E Maxx, and has the bug for speed and back flippin' power! (We do a back flip contest during our MMRC shows) and he is left out with the summit lol.

Thanks again for everyone's help lol.

Re: Brushless Motor for a Summit

I will add my 2cents here.

I also have the Summit, three actually, I have purposely left all three absolutely bone stock other than the install of low voltage alarms and differant wheel/tire combos. One truck has a DeWalt 14.4v motor, but the other two have the Titan 775.

The reason I have not upgraded the motor and esc to brushless is durability. In stock form the Summit is darn near indistructable. I have hours and hours on my trucks and have not needed to fix anything other than two drive axles, which were completely worn out anyway and a set of steering servo gears. Probably 75% of the driving with the Summit is in low gear. I go trail walking and crawling with it. I also bash with them but the brushed system is not powerfull enough to destroy anything.

If you want a brushless system so you can drive fast and bash hard I can say with certainty that you will tear the diffs out of your truck quite frequently. The locking differentials just ca'nt stand up to brushless power unless you are willing to spend the time and money making them bullet proof with aluminum diff cups, hardened gears and shimming. Diffs are most definately the weak link, other than that the Summit is still pretty durable.

But back to your question. The Mamba 2200 would be a good option as it is a direct bolt in, but it is sensorless, so you will get some slight cogging at the lowest of throtle settings.
If money is no object then the Tekin RX8 would probably be the nicest brushless you could buy. It is sensored so cogging would not be an issue. I believe it is a direct bolt in as well.
Hobbywing also makes some nice brushless systems for 1/8 scale trucks. This would most definately be your cheapest route.

This is my opinion only but leave the Summit the way it is and use it as intended. It will have a very long life with little down time. Keep your Revo as your speed truck.
My E-Revo is high maintenance due to the brushless power, I have another chewed rear diff right now, but I drive it like an idiot.
My Summit's are very low maintenance but ultra fun just the way they are. It is still my most used ground vehicle.
Have fun either way.

Re: Brushless Motor for a Summit

ahhh...

You can't really compare between sizes. It all depends on the gearing, the use and what standard they are measuring to.

kv purely means rpms / volt, does not matter what size motor it is. So all things being equal in size and battery, a lower kv motor will be slower but more torque, a higher kv motor faster but less torque.

Re: Brushless Motor for a Summit

You have the basics correct. kV is an indicator of a motors RPM capability. The 3500 VXL would run at 25,900rpm with 7.4V, while the 2200 Castle would run 16,280rpm. But the Castle is designed for more voltage, so at 14.8V it would run at 35,560rpm.

The Castle is a much bigger motor and will put out much more torque than the VXL, and will run faster if run at the optimal 14.8V.

That all being said, I run a Tekin RX8 ESC and 1550kV truggy motor in my Summit and it is fast in high gear and has tons of torque in low gear (many twisted axles and driveshafts when playing in the dry creekbeds). It is also sensored, so it is a bit smoother at the low speeds. I run the Summit with 4S and in high gear the stock tires turn into bicycle wheels. I also have the exact same combo in an E-Maxx but run 6S on that one and WOW.

Re: Brushless Motor for a Summit

I must have it all backwards then.
I was going on the comparison of the 3500 VXL motor from Traxxas vs the 2200 motor from castle.... the 2200 being a bigger motor, faster speed, more torque

Thats why I thought a 1700kv motor would be worse then the 2200kv in this situation.

Re: Brushless Motor for a Summit

Why would you think that??? kv is rpms/volt so with the same battery a lower kv motor will run less rpms so it would be slower...
