Re: Advice Please; HoneyBee FP Power Issue

The new frame, boom, shaft, gear, pushrods, and assorted other bits I figure I'll need finally arrived! I have successfully resurrected the machine to its former pristine state (it went really well, too! At least I am strong with the force when it comes to assembly & repairs!) I've lashed down all the stray wiring and adjusted things almost perfectly. And it will hover now! But I still need to get it into a more open space, because it's still a bit swingy and I'm still not good enough to reign it in within the confines of my living room (plus my wife is less than keen about the nicks in the drywall! How fussy can you get?!)

Therefore I am keener than ever to find someone with a steadier hand than mine...AND a space larger than my living room in which to trim this bird properly.

Please.

Re: Advice Please; HoneyBee FP Power Issue

Okay - I need a helper in my general neck of the woods. Someone who has some ESky stuff sittin' around AND that likes pizza and/or beer.

I ran outta patience and took it up inside at work. It flies really well now. Too well for my level of experience, actually. On its maiden flight (after new motor->old motor->second dogbone) I swung it into an abandoned generator and bashed it up a bit. It's nothing I can't fix, but that -- coupled with the less-than-supportive (but gentle) suggestion from Cap'n Jac -- has shaken my resolve with this particular bird. I'd just like to get it flying nicely and then re-sell it to a good home where it'll be appreciated better than it is at my place.

Anyone on the Oakville/Mississauga/Burlington area, please & thank you?

On & on...

I was fortunate enough to be able to fish the previous (OE 10T) motor outta the trash and stick it on the machine. It now shows signs of climbing higher than 12". But I need to get a more-experienced pilot to try it out [again] and see.

Meanwhile, I find myself wondering whether -- if ten teeth is better than nine -- why not ELEVEN teeth?!

Re: Advice Please; HoneyBee FP Power Issue

bah!!

Okay - firstly...the connector for the motor is quite different than that for the battery. So - yeah I suppose I could rig up something, but I'd rather wait 'til I can try a temp replacement ESC.

BUT...

I asked my friend the helo guru and incredibly he came up with a suggestion that had NEVER occurred to me!! He knew that the tail motor plug is the same size & shape as the main motor plug...and wondered if perhaps they'd been accidentally swapped on the ESC!!

< screeching tire sound >

Nope. He was half right; the ESC does seem to put out more power to the main motor connection. I found this out because -- when I swapped them -- the machine spun in a circle so fast that I could hardly see the detail of the canopy!! (But the main motor hardly turned at all)

Back to the drawing board.

Re: Advice Please; HoneyBee FP Power Issue

Well...admittedly it is not a reliable test, but I feel fairly confident that -- if indeed there is an additional 40% more power available from the motor -- I should be able to feel the increased pull against my hand/arm (as I clutch the heli to prevent it taking flight)

Mind you, this is entirely dependent upon the presumption that the ESC is faulty...and is therefore 'holding back' the motor somehow.

I think I'll try it. As long as I'm not gonna burn it up, why not?

(stay tuned!)

Re: Advice Please; HoneyBee FP Power Issue

Sure you can hook it up directly, it is not brushless motor, but a bit dangerous, health wise. , how you going to control it or just feel the power?

Re: Advice Please; HoneyBee FP Power Issue

Hey Ron , I fought with one of those for 9 months then went out and bought a blade , two fo my friends bought the same as you , both have retired from learning heli's, I however am a decent hei pilot now, no insult meant here just quality control being the main issue with the brand you have. That blade SR has a new buddy going quite strong, he is loving it, his brother in law bought the f\p blade 120 and for a first heli is getting real good at it. I guess what I am saying is for under $200 you can have a heli and begin to learn to fly.

Re: Advice Please; HoneyBee FP Power Issue

That's a very kind offer - thank you! Do you (or does anyone) know of a test I might perform to rule out any of the possible problems? Can I hook up the battery directly to the motor for instance? Of course it wouldn't be controllable, but perhaps I can perceive a RPM difference(?) or would it fry the armature?

Any other temp tricks that could reveal the problem? Is there any preceedent for a ESC failure? If indeed the ESC is pooched...is it conceivable that it would allow "near-normal" functionality (as it is actually doing now)? I would've thought it would be a go/no-go situation.

Thank you for your contributions, gentlemen!

If you ever get to east end of To, I would have a look and help you out, I have a lot of old parts. Without see it it is hard to tell what's up, or in this case not up

Re: Advice Please; HoneyBee FP Power Issue

It's official; it won't fly! I took it to a new friend's place, and at FULL throttle it only lifts itself about a foot off the floor.

I tried three different (and full) batteries; all were 7.4v "stubbies" with mAH ratings between 800 and 1200. Then my friend suggested a CX2 battery. And we also tried new mylar-coated wood blades AND OE black plastic. It performed exactly the same through all of these changes.

This is with a brand new motor (9T pinion) and what certainly seems to be a free-wheeling shaft+drive gear stack.

WTF - now what?! He wondered whether the ESC could be pooched. Could it? Short of trying another one, how would I know?
