I’m a tool maker at Fords and in a short wile will look to retirement. In the 26 years I have worked there I have been lucky enough to be able to use the equipment for my government jobs. I have seen other tool makers who have retired return time and time again asking if one of us could make something for them. I vowed I would not do that. I make a lot of things for my own projects I don’t want to give that up. I had an old small Atlas that I sold and replaced with this one. Between that and the CNC mill I feel I can just about do anything I want. On top of that it gives me the capacity to do small machining jobs on the side for a bit of extra cash to help offset the cost of tooling. Kicking around a buisness card design if I decide to take on some outside work.

Nice job on the chip containment, I gotta do something like that, I tired of tracking it thru the house. It just always seems that the projects take priority over things like that, like the 4" rotary table I just finished building for my mill.

Re: New Toy

Just finished turning some aluminum started with 4 inch square aluminum stock. Ran it at 1000 rpm, 1/8 cut lots of chips all but a few remained inside the shroud. Coolant was contained completely inside the chip shroud.

Needed some chip control so this is the chuck end of the chip hood. The rest of the bed will have the same lexan cover and hinges. Hinges made on the CNC mill.

Dennis,
I guess since I grew up with, and work with woodworking machines all day they dont have that "zing" that metal working stuff does for me. Its a hobby of mine, as you know, and having cnc, and large size stuff is not practical for me. But I am still amazed at the stuff I have and what can be done with it when you put youyr mind to it.

Your lathe looks awesome... I am sure it will produce a lot of parts for you

And seriously, I will probably have a full month of unpacking, cleaning and degreasing machinery, and assembly/setup this fall. ANyone want to come up and help, just ask

Setting up a whole new shop is a daunting task, yet its a thrilling thing as well... I plan to finally have a permanent place to work on planes, as well. My old shop never afforded me that space.

How are your radials coming along?
