Glad you are finding gliders therapeutic, I can fully understand that!

Re: Been a while

The last few days have been pretty good for winter flying. Winter gliders are exactly what I need with what is going on in the family. Quiet, peaceful soaring to alleviate the stresses that have been thrown our way, good medicine.

Every time I head to the hospital I have to remind myself that there are two type of patients there, One is a person, the other is a state of mind.

Go soaring its good for the soul!

Re: Been a while

Well I missed out on flyin' the first day of the year, got 3 flights in today. Still testing with some camera equipment, which adds 6.8oz. Second flight was just the glider, had to call it @ 13:12 seconds. Even with a covering of snow the spots where it is just barely white yielded a few bump of lift. Can't expect a "hot-liner" type glider to hone in on a tiny bubble, can ya???

I did miss the simplicity, and calm of low budget e-gliding. Yeah Merv it ain't a pure glider but put the stresses of what 2016 is probably going to bring!

Re: Been a while

No balsa dust until they figure out the maximum height I can fly one.

Welcome back from the dark side Brent!(for you Chris!)

Yes the stress/fun ratio is much more manageable!

Now you just need to abandon that foam fluff and start making some balsa dust again!

Gliding never leaves the blood. Just a temporary leave of absence

Re: Been a while

This ain't the dark side!!!!! I also have a multi-rotor with FPV gear! I guess if you consider the chance of new regs coming out of Ottawa, the glider (need to finish putting together the 3M Ibis I bought 4 years ago) and the UAV might get me in trouble!!!!

I know that today my house was buzzed (20' above the peak of my roof) by a full scale plane. The maiden of this foamy glider was at least at the 90M altitude. But then again, I only see 10-15 full scale planes a year in the strike zone.

The idiot that buzzed us this morning is probably the neighbor 6 miles away, but he didn't give us any side profile to see his ID markings..... If I would have been flying at my runways, me or a spotter wouldn't have had time to react. My runways are 18 meters below the top of my house. That would have been a great incident to explain to the MAAC ins. provider!!!!

Been a while

Its been a while since I posted in this section of the site. Seems I have come round full circle. Started on gliders, moved to glow, then giant scale gas with a wee bit of competition, and now I'm back to gliders.

I was given a pure glider and high start that a guy was going to turf in the trash. It needed some TLC which I gave it. Flew all right, but was a lot of work to set everything up. Not bad in the months when the ground is green/brown, but less than enjoyable when momma earth is covered in this white stuff....

A guy 50 miles up the road offered me a new (- the box and set-up instructions) FMS 2.3M ASW28. The price was right and like any ole pack-rat I have enough re-cycled electronics to re-fit 3 e-gliders. The FMS brand seems to use low end servos and ESCs, but I thought I'd try her out on what she came with.

Set her up to the on-line specs for throws and CG. This resulted in a 10' flight, busting the cheap plastic folding prop adapter. Now this isn't all FMS's fault, when I put the CG marks on the wing, I should have been paying a little more attention, experience should have kicked in and questioned the mark placement.

So I had to source another adapter. NO joy with FMS, but I lucked out. The guy that owned this thing has a laser printer. I dropped off the chunks of the original and less than 24 hrs later I had a printed nylon adapter that seems to look and work better than the factory original.

I did some math and came up with better CG using the MAC formula. Set the CG and gave her a whirl today. NW breeze @ 10-15km/hr minus 6C and ~70% RH. She took to flight like she was supposed to, 5 minutes and the timer went off. Cue to land and see if anything needed attention. Have to admit, I was a bit rusty and was horsing her around too much. BUT, without any thought I reverted back to the old glider guy watching closely for those little bumps which might indicate thermal activity.

Checked her over, charged the battery, and did it again! At the 8 minute mark my hands reminded me that I'd abused them over my long(ish) working career, and with the feeling fading in them I chose to land her.

I cut my teeth on e-gliders when I started out. When flying liquid powered planes I always kept in mind that IF the engine died I was flyin' a heavy glider. This saved me a lot of coin for those times that I was in power trouble. I missed silent flight, while this glider has some habits my Radians didn't it, makes me feel relaxed and happy that I've come full circle!
