Re: Fpv?
All monitors are the same, laptop is equally invisible in sunlight. People tried all kinds of things, I have a cardboard box I use on my laptop when I am in the garden and it works but the display is very light, you really need to cover it well. Like SCRTSQRL, he is well known for flying Big wing easystar to in Norway up to 2.5 km out to sea. He started with monitor in the box hanging from his neck and now uses goggles and his entire FPV outfit is in that little side pouch.
All his stuff is here:
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=810365
I included the forever classic "shoebox on the face". I also saw people use tripods with tight boxes to stare into.
With any of these, you really don't want general public to watch you.
I feel stupid when I have my Hatcam on

Dan don't bother with the rear view mirror monitor or at least not this one http://cgi.ebay.ca/Innovatek-10-2-CA...ht_9898wt_1005 I got one and absolutely useless once you go out side i don't think it could be shaded enough to work even with a towel over my head completely enclosing my head and monitor could not see anything at all on the screen oh well maybe I can sell it to some one for what it was intended for not going to work for FPV

Re: Fpv?
Sounds like a good winter project for me. My Easystar is pretty tired so I'll probably order a new one for FPV. I will try to read reviews of the gear before buying and certainly won't buy the cheapest stuff I can find. Without breaking the bank, I will still need to have full confidence in it when I'm using it to fly around. Too bad we all live so far away from eachother. It would be fun to meet up and see eachother's gear first hand and go flying together.

I really don't see myself uprgrading my DX6i for FPV. If I can keep the whole project under, say, 800 bucks I'll go for it. Mark you can do this for a cheap as you want or you can spend thousands of dollars all depends on what you want to do. You can use the cam you have now as long as it outputs video to external monitor when it is recording, some cams don't, the lumix cam I had wouldn't output video while it was recording, screen would just go blank it's very easy to check plug cable into your cam and TV and hit the record button on the cam if the video continues to play on the TV screen while recording your good to go. FVP is like any other part of this hobby some guys have thousands of dollars in an airplane that they fly others do it very modestly, who has the most fun I am guess the guy with very little invested is have every bit as much fun as the guy with 5-6 thousand invested and in some case more fun.

Re: Fpv?
Mark. With one vtx(100-200mw) and vrx, one camera and a plane, you would have enough to have a blast. It would probably be less then $800, more like $500. There is a drawback to using LCD screens for FPV. If you lose vid signal, your LCD will turn to the blue screen of death! There is a device that will keep the signal going to the screen, even when a terrible signal. Others like a tube type of monitor. At least you will still get a fuzzy picture and have a chance to get the plane back. It shouldn't be a problem with LOS recording.
Here are a couple pictures of Jettpilot's FPV "command module". Mike has been doing this for a long time and it was his plane that flew 25km and back. This is an extreme case of going FPV.

Mark, the Sony Webbie you have has a direct output that you can use as fpv camera for now. I am sure if you get hooked you will use completely different equipment then now. Goggles, dual RX, boosters, long range radios...... Besides technology is changing on daily basis and what is hot now, is obsolete by Christmas. I am going on budget too and if I do not like it I did not spent much. By the way I think your Radian may be better for this, stable and you can put antennas much farther apart or your easy glider pro if you don't use that one so much any more.
