Re: Hobbyking, customs fees?

FEdex, UPS, DHL etc is just making sure the GST gets collected,

Perhaps 1000's of government employees are in the loop

as Canada Border Service Agents, good job perhaps?

In conjunction with one another they are charged with adding a code and determining If taxes apply as well as setting the CDN $ value and adding the GST.

They want money for this, agree or disagree that's the way it's been for years, and many Americans and Canadians thought free Trade was in effect, Not so !

Couriers' DHL , FEDEX, UPS consistently do this on packages originating from the states, in my view though less so on packages from other countries.

Of course If you buy a package from a legitimate Business in the US then an invoice and actual Value of Purchase form is part of the package and the fees can get out of hand.

On shipments from individuals often one or the other has concerns with respect to loss of package and Insurance, and then the Insured Value is used for collecting of Taxes and Handling Fee Charges.

USA is ideally situated with it's 300 million plus people as a source for much of what Canada needs.
Some is imported and re Distributed and then the Distributer passes on these Costs, and as a business passes on the GST and other costs on to us, resulting in these higher prices we see here.

Perhaps the solution is all shipments of 1000.00 or less and all used Toy Plane Parts should be able to move across the border from USA to Canada without being subject to this kind of Scrutinering, taxation

Strangely though, for Door to Door shipments and Purchases, sourcing our toys from the USA is likely the more expensive of the Options we have.

Tks

I placed a $67 dollar order as a test with the US warehouse.

Got an invoice from Fedex Canada:

GST $4.35
PST $6.08
Clearance entry fee $19.30
Advancement fee $10.00
GST 1.47

Total due to Fedex is $41.20.

So please Hobbyking (USA) use US Parcel service, but not UPS or Fedex.
The Brokerage Fees are killer!
HK shipping is free.
FedEx is not free, they have set up their own toll booth and will screw you.
Do not register with them.
Keep your stuff away from them.

Re: Hobbyking, customs fees?

So $30 usd after unavoidable gst/pst and if registered with them you would only pay the $10 advancement fee. My orders are usually twice the amount and if I paid gst/pst and $10 that would be less than the gas to my lhs and then factor in the sometimes half price goods.

Not everyone lives across the street from an lhs. Do whatever and critcise if you must but there are bargains if you know what to do. How many times do we need to post that you register with Fedex and then get charged taxes and $10!! Geeze!

But hey he only paid $67 usd for his order , such a deal.....lol
At least, jborge listed the other costs to show people the true cost of goods.

See and hear It all the time ; right across Canada. If people spent as much time in researching stuff on line in Canada vs the time they spent searching the internet outside of the Country then they would probably find that deals can be had here.
Yes, there are times when items may not be stocked with your LHS or online in Canada , so shopping out of the country may be necessary.

Your parcel will get thru just fine.
Don't worry about declared value, just leave it as it is on the website.

As Jeremy said, most you will be charged is $7.00.

All this chat (4 pages worth) about customs fee's just attracts attention where you may not want it.

Nuff said.

Bj.
Thanks! Although I personally think it's important to discuss this. Why should we be afraid to attract attention unless we are doing something wrong?
