Your quote about the "twin engine cub" is very interesting to me. That was precisely my design objective in those exact words. I'm not fussy for cubs myself (no offense to Mr. Piper and all his fans). The youtube video is more along the lines of what I was thinking of. Beautiful! Absolutely beautiful!

Looks good Aurele, I have a couple brushless motors and ESC's on order for the DO28, the glow power is going to get yanked.

That's a project for this winter, I will need to build a hatch in the nose to get to the batterys, thinking about going with a couple 5c 5000 mah lipo's....I'm still new to this electric flying, used to burning gas and glow, not electrons, so it will be a learning experiance

Re: Dornier DO28 Skyservant (Build Thread)

Hi,

I saw your Skyservant picture in Model Aviation Canada. It really caught my eye. Very nice.

I built a Dornier 28A a few years ago. It has about 10 flights on it. I need to re-bend the landing gear. I'm always on the lookout for interesting civilian airplanes. At first I thought it was such an ugly airplane, then as I considered building it I started to really appreciate its unique character.

I was thinking that it would be most unlikely that anyone in the Ottawa Remote Control Club (ORCC) would have ever heard of it. Well, to my surprise, one of our club members was an aircraft mechanic in the far north on the Do-28A. And he had pictures to prove it. Amazing coincidence!

The specs are:
- 2 Saito 56 4-cycle
- About 12 to 13 pounds
- 86" wing span

Every flight has been an adventure. If I ever decide to model it again I will pick a much more docile airfoil (clark-Y maybe). I used an Eppler 197 which is very low drag and fast. I have been thinking of a smaller electric version for outdoor and maybe an even smaller version for indoor similar in size to the new indoor Mosquito from e-flite.

Wow! Amazingly interesting maiden. I have had terribly bad results with maidens gone wrong. Looking forward to the pictures..

Re: Dornier DO28 Skyservant (Build Thread)

took the Skyservant to the field yesterday, spent a bit of time tuning the engines, a few more taxi tests and then crossed my fingers and opened the tap!
both Pro.46's spooled up to full power, and tracked pretty strait down the centerline and took off.
And then the fun began....I could have used a few more ounces of balast in the nose, and the throws were a bit much, so it was pretty sporting for the first bit.
That is one of the problems you find when you design your own plane, there are no instructions, or throw recomendations, you just need to make an educated guess.
I needed to crank the elevator trip nose down, and a bit of right aleron trim.
After a very short time of trimming, I had the left engine start sagging, and then quit, but the plane was high enough for this to not be a dire emergency. I throttled back teh right motor and started thinking about my best aproach line.
the landing was a crosswind, but with only a couple kph of wind from the north, I chose a longer runway with a better aproach over a shorter one into the wind. other than being touchy (a little to much elevator throw and not enough nose weight) the landing was fine, and I even taxied back to the pits on one engine.
I will post a few pic's of the plane soon.

Re: Dornier DO28 Skyservant (Build Thread)

Been a wile since I posted any updates...the covering is on and a few of the windows are in, the onboard glow system is rigged and installed, wings are covered and flaps rigged, alerons are covered but not yet glued in, same goes for the tail feathers.

I'll try to get a cople pic's posted later today.

I'll be going with a green-olive cammo scheme with a grey bottom.

Got the wing joined now, and set it on the fuse, starting to look like a plane.
