Ali was there today so we had a great chat with him about the stabs and he gave them a good bend and gave them the seal of approval, LOL
That's a nice looking hawk, i sure miss mine..

Looks good!

Did you know that the bar code on the back is Marlboro's way of sponsorship, since Tobacco advertisement has been banned from F1. If you where to scan it, it would give you the price of a pack of smokes.

Re: FEJ Hawk crash

I just finished up the rebuild of Peter's FEJ Hawk . Stabs turned out well and the are rock solid.

I also put in a Tams pipes... The one that came with this Hawk had the inner and outter layers of the pipe welded at both ends. Just a few run ups of the turbine and it was warped like a prettle.

Hopefully we can maiden this hawk this week in time for winghman

Re: FEJ Hawk crash

Just wondering as I am finishing the mods on my FEJ 1/4.5 Hawk stabs, should have closed up next week end, I did switch out the H/C spars for aircraft ply, then added C/F. maddog

Re: FEJ Hawk crash

On that note, I've gotten quite a few good flights on my Skymaster Large Hawk and love that plane!! Flies awesome with the K180G. Really scoots along and I was pulling some fairly hard corners and so far no issues with the stab or any other component. Really hoping the FEJ Hawk flies as well!!

Re: FEJ Hawk crash

Brad... Peter finished repainting the stab after I skinned it. It's now sitting back in my shop to bolt the stab on. Peter also got a Tams pipe for it, which I have to put in. I'd love to maiden it and put some time on it this coming weekend - very dependant on Peter's schedule!!

We'll get video of it for sure!

The stab is rock solid now - no way it could possibly fold under load!

Pics coming in the next few days.

Re: FEJ Hawk crash

Yep! We talked about just gutting it and starting fresh, but the existing honeycomb spars weigh next to nothing so not really much to be saved. At least the honeycomb spars gave me something to put the CF onto. Even a balsa spar with CF wouldn't be as light as a honeycomb spar with CF. I'd still want a CF mat top and bottom, since I don't trust the honeycomb skin structurally and wood spars aren't light either and you still face the challenge of how to tie it onto a stubby joiner bar if it were all gutted.

I think my reinforcement was overkill and I probably could have saved 1.5-2oz but I'd feel like crap if it still let go, so I figured a bit of a weight penalty was a small price to pay for a model that still flew, LOL.

Re: FEJ Hawk crash

I think the whole problem is that stupid honeycomb spar. If that was mine, I would have removed it and made a new one from rock maple and cf unidirectional laminate. Ideally the entire spar unit should be titanium hysolled into the glass stabs. Good repair but man, lots of work and needless weight if it was done correctly in the first place.
