Re: AW 50cc Ultimate QB

Yikes! I owned one a couple years ago that met its demise when it dead sticked and couldn't make it back. I found the quality to be not bad and really had no complaints

CG issued resolved, knife edge passes both ways show no bad habits (none that require mixes and switches anyway). Old DLE55 flys it the way I fly. but would like the sound of a twin instead!

Re: AW 50cc Ultimate QB

The taxiing issue is now resolved, the straight gear was all it took. The difference in axle position was 2 5/8". Plane has coupling issues in knife edge, but I haven't got the CG just right YET!

A couple more flights and I might even decal (stickers for the EM) her up. Around here we don't waste our time putting decals on until airworthiness is achieved.

I have only ever owned one other bi-plane, a Phaeton 90. It was as docile and a baby lamb, even in a dive. The AW Ultimate looks to fly a lot like the AW Extra 300, slippery in down-lines! Could become a favorite to fly (apart from the PITA set-up tear-down). To overcome this issue I has designated a spot in the trailer to haul it with the wings on.

On mine in the recover I tapped the tabs in the wing 8-32 and drilled out the interplane struts same on the top cabanes makes set up way quicker

Re: AW 50cc Ultimate QB

Finally got the maiden done this morning, and she lived to fly another day. Was a quick 5 minute shake-down flight. It was set up as per the AW specs (CG and throws), perhaps I've been flying IMAC style too much, but the roll rate on low rates was crazy fast.

My search is on for straight carbon-fiber main gear, it is a little light in the tail on the ground. It did exhibit a bit nose heavy in the air (45 up-line and pull to the top wing), so I'll move that so she is a bit more neutral. The odd thing is, is that it needed some down elevator, as she kept climbing. (ended up with 4% down) This is likely to do with incidence of the HS (I may be wrong).

While it was a short flight, the DLE55 spinning a Wood Falcon 22X8 (I always maiden gas engine planes with a wood prop) it seemed to handle it with authority. Landing was great, but the taxiing was poor.

It displays in the air well, even with poor old eye-sight. I have allocated a spot in the trailer for it to be hauled with the wings on. I like to fly, I am not a huge fan of taking great flyin' weather and assembling and disassembling a plane. Glad I have my own airfield 100 meters from the house!!!

All in all it will be a nice plane to fly once dialed in!

Hmmm, My oldest ones are 4 years old and haven't shown any issues, with lots of flying. Guess I have more junk huh!

Slow poor centering and a 25% failure rate gave the rest away ( ( with dsir warning) as I couldn't sell them as trustworthy . Now I have mainly gone hv only life on the 50cc stuff as they use 5955 hotels .... I could have saved you the assembly on the ultimate I have one here just about finished a recover has 7954 hotels all round os 55 gt good flier a bit heavy in the tail keep battery to back of firewall

Re: AW 50cc Ultimate QB

I may have to let most of my RC stuff go in the near future. 2016 has proven to be challenging thus far. Wish I'd learned how NOT buy high and sell SHORT!
