Re: 2011 Basic Thanks Bryan: To all potential scale aerobatic pilots, despite the name "Basic" this is a fantastic way to sharpen your flying skills if the competition part does not appeal to you (yet). It is just a title for the first level and not meant to put down the class. This is one of the most challenging classes as the pilots are learning so many new things that is is almost overwhelming at times. The upper classes are learning new handling skills at each level where all the fundamental information is already engrained. "Basic" should be called something like "the ultimate step" class. We have all seen the Red Bull planes and other aerobatic pilots cutting through the sky with great precision. This is exactly what we are trying to replicate with our rc planes as we can't afford the full size ones (at least I can't yet). It is an amazing feeling to watch your own plane complete a manouver with the precision of a full size plane whether just practicing with someone or in competition. Sometimes it is hard to tell they are not full size and that is one of the main goals of IMAC. The competition adds great support and feedback to help everyone get better. Many situations have involved the loaning of planes by competitors in the same or other classes to continue. There is no better support than that. I had a loaner for the entire season last year and offered the same plane to a competitor in my class to help him finish in the competiton ahead of me. If you fly scale of any size, you want the flight to look real. So do we but in the area of aerobatics. We have several pilots in Northern Ontario that are going to join us in the basic class. Their goals, just what I mentioned above, to become better pilots and improve their skills. They have all indicated the desire to fly one contest (the NOIC) not for the competition but to be involved with and gain information from other scale aerobatic pilots. You don't have to join IMAC to fly in a competition but you must have MAAC. To all pilots, join us this weekend for a great season opener workshop. Brendan |

Re: 2011 Basic I always say the hardest thing to do is that first contest. Once you get to know the guys and know that we are all here to help each other it gets easier. As long as you have reasonable skills and can control the plane then by all means get the sequence, practice and give it a try. You need to come out and get some practical coaching to really learn how to improve your flying skills and that is only likely to happen at a contest interacting with experienced pilots who can give you advice and suggestions. Just be determined to do it next year and come out and join the fun. |

Re: 2011 Basic Welcome to the family guys. That's a perfect way to try IMAC. Pick a particular contest or two, and practice for them. If you can work together, practice calling every step (even if you have it memorized) and even add some critical but supportive judging of each other. With the caller, you can focus on the maneuver you are doing and not start thinking ahead. Remember, the scores don't matter, it is the challenge of mastering a maneuver. The one dreaded maneuver for me last year was the tear drop. I just couldn't get it right for the longest time. Well with practice and determination, it turned out to be one of my best scoring maneuvers for my last two contests. Hope to see you at the NOIC. Brendan |

Re: 2011 Basic I've threatened to try IMAAC for the past couple of years now, even attended spring info session some of the guys have put together. (Learned alot). But to many distractions and growing family gets in the way. next summer I have a goal of attending at least one contest if not 2. i have the Basic 2011 sequences printed out and lamentated ready for use. I have been practicing on the sim and my foamy plane as well. Get'n ready for next year. i have one plane ready to go and another needing to be covered. Come on summer 2011 Dave |
