Re: Icare Magellan E powered glider

Had a little problem today with the Maggy. I found that the ailerons were giving intermittent response. Sometimes it would turn one way only and sometimes wouldn't turn at all with the ailerons. Got her down OK and checked the aileron movement while she sat on the ground where she landed. (No one else flying). The inboard ends of the ailerons were fouling the outboard ends of the flaps and sometimes hanging up. I have no idea why this should suddenly start happening. Both ailerons and flaps have live hinges so nothing had moved. Maybe the wing was flexing a bit under load although it happened on the ground as well. Anyway I have made a bit more clearance between tips now.

Thanks Lorne, I'll reduce the settings, I'm sure that will improve the performance.

Re: Icare Magellan E powered glider

Had a great day here in Truro. A lot of thermal activity and the Mag went up like an elevator. Eventually I had to "dive" it out before I lost sight of it. I need a bigger plane!
I'm still very much at the beginning of the learning curve in this. I selected camber on and off during a couple of flights and it didn't seem to make any difference except to induce drag. The ailerons drop about 1/8 " at the outboard edge and the flaps drop about 10 degrees, maybe that's too much. The other thing is I'm not sure when is the right time to deploy camber. It's starting to get really interesting and more of a challenge every flight.

Hi Dan, I tried the DX8 Radian download from Spektrum but it didn't work for the Mag. I watched the DX7 video and got a couple of ideas from it. I have managed to program camber and reflex into the Mag. Now I need a day with suitable weather to go out and try it. Thanks for the tips.

Hi Dan, I have both DX7 (one of the originals) and DX8. I use the DX7 as just a backup now. I'll try the Radian download, thanks for the tip.

Re: Icare Magellan E powered glider

Hi Maddog, I have my flaps set at about 10% for mid position, for landing it's about 80% for flaps and up 10% for ailerons. I haven't actually caught it yet but it comes in very slowly. I'm practising spotting it now.

Hello , I am flying bobreib old Magellan and I am happy with its flying (thanks Bob) but would like to know what % of throws you have when you set up your "crow" . Are the flaps down said 25% and the aileron up at 25%? My first flight with the Magellan was uneventful and with flaps down I could almost catch it when I landed. Great little glider!
