Re: USA Funds

I rebuilt a motor for a friend of mine and my LHS charged me a 75% mark-up on the parts. As I said in another post, capitalism is about the profit. But the same shop when our Dollar was $1.07 years ago was still charging par.

Not sure when the last time was that you visited RCToys website but the last time I did ; you have an option of selecting Cad and all the pricing comes up in Cad. I never followed thru with an order to see if all the other calculation ie taxes and whatever are calculated into Cad onto your credit card.

As I had explained in an earlier post they then have the ability to daily or maybe weekly make an adjustment with the exchange rate to offset any gain/loss to their investment inventory as 99% of their inventory would be bought by them in USD. Very simple and a smart way to do business in Canada and world wide.

We found the same in the few South American countries we visited where there was a large discrepancy between local currency and the US dollar. Most small vendors had problems making change for small purchases if you paid for in US funds. Some had problems converting as well. If you’re going to play in the streets among the vendors and use US currency bring lots of Ones not many can make change for much bigger. Most times if you pay in US you end up paying a premium and its doubtful you will get US change for larger bills. If you still want to pay in US know what the bank exchange is and what to expect to pay exchange on the street. It can be significantly different.

Costa Rica for instance has Tico prices and non Tico prices. Large stores will have the prices listed on the shelf and there will be less chance of a discount but the prices are in many places the same for Ticos as well as tourists. Medium size stores, vendors, services will have Tico and non Tico prices and you can usually do some bargaining (it’s expected) or ask for discounts as long as you remain respectful.

Of all the places Costa Rica has been the most fun for the wife and me.

Did not see Canada here

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Monday added China’s currency, the renminbi, to the basket of official world reserve currencies. The renminbi, which is denominated in yuan, joins the U.S. dollar, British sterling, the euro and the Japanese yen as one of five currencies making up the IMF’s basket of special drawing rights (SDRs).

The IMF’s board of directors voted on a recommendation from the agency’s staff and endorsed by IMF managing director Christine Lagarde earlier this month.

I am patriotic. I use .ca domain names for sites on the internet but I would advise most businesses to also use the .com domain name. It's business!

Re: USA Funds

The amusing thing about this discussion is that about 3 years ago the US dollar was in the tank (the financial press was giving Canada rave reviews for the stability of our dollar) and there was much talk of the Chinese currency being the next world market standard. But for a whim or two and some chance happenings we could easily have been having this same debate over the Canadian dollar vs The Chinese currency.

May still yet, such is the fickle nature of world markets!

It is a silly argument and that's because it's an emotional one for him. He's perceiving that Canadian vendors trading in US currency are somehow anti-Canadian and are treating Canadian customers as second class citizens.

That's not the case but, his perception is his reality

The real reality is that they are trading in the currency of the majority of their customers and stabilizing their prices.

Re: USA Funds

It may be a recognised currency but you really can't purchase much outside Canada with it. Even the Canadian Government purchases their military equipment in US funds. Go on vacation outside Canada and try and use Canadian currency LOL.

Re: USA Funds

The last time I checked the Canadian dollar was recognized as valid on world money markets. Has that changed?

I am a citizen of Canada, we Canadians have a perfectly legitimate monetary system that has worked for us for over 100 years. I get paid in Canadian dollars, do my banking, pay my bills, buy goods, budget my household and do all my leisure activities in Canadian dollars. It works fine. Until I am told I am a citizen of the United States of America I will continue to expect to do so. Period!

I can't believe the length you guys are going to to justify someone of your own country treating you as a second class customer!

That is what it is pure and simple when you strip all the rhetoric off.
