Struts all set up and the alignment and incidence was pretty much spot on. Ziroli actually makes this, the most difficult part of the build, fairly easy.

Steve (Pappy) has taken over this build. I found him a corner in the shop and he has been working away on "Thursday Build Night" and weekends. I will post some progress pics.

Re: Ziroli 1/4 DR1 Build "Ernst Udet"

This build is alive and well!! I managed to build the bottom wing this weekend in between working on the 1/3 DVII. Straight forward construction. I opted for the spruce 1/4"sq spars instead of balsa.....Nick gives you the choice of either one. The one thing I did notice...... Nick took into consideration the lengths of balsa that are available to the model builder. There is very little wasted wood. The wing tips were supposed to be block balsa but again I opted for a more scale look with a flat 1/4" sheet wing tip. I am also playing around with a more scale looking rudder than the one Nick has designed.....

Re: Ziroli 1/4 DR1 Build "Ernst Udet"

The Ziroli plans do show an optional mid wing set of ailerons......I immediately dismissed them as they are NOT scale as per what Gordon has said. I am not sure why Nick incorporated them into the plans. I will be running my wires up the struts as Gordon did. Ziroli just uses wire for the cabane struts but I will be using K&S aluminum and wire to make mine. As for electric power I have no idea....Nick calls for a 38cc gas so I did some research.....see the attached link. Just remember all the weight will be needed up front, batteries etc.

Can't help you on the electric motor front but the DR1 only had ailerons on the top wing. You can hide the aileron leads inside the streamlined fairing around the centre struts going to the to the top wing (this is what I did in my BUSA DR1).

Re: Ziroli 1/4 DR1 Build "Ernst Udet"

Hi there
liking the build thread alot.. answers alot of question but can i I a few strange ones??
#1 the plans i got from nick shows the aileron servo in 2 places.. the upper wing and the middle wing.. now i am no expert but why not the middle wing? seems easier right? no wires to hide?

#2 can you point me to a brushless motor? I have to fly electric ( she who must me obeyed) has a thing about the smell of fuel. I dont have an outside work shop yet..

thanks.. it looks great so far

Joe,
Flying season is in full swing here in Alberta! Not much done on the DR1....actually the only thing I have done is the rib stitching on the stab, elevator and rudder. I will update the thread once in get going again.
