Yes, we had a sanction. I don't know why is was never put on the calendar.

Was this a MAAC sanctioned event?

I don't see it listed on the Southeast Zone Contest calendar - http://www.maac.ca/events/view_events.php?zn=12

Then you, Doug, an Pat all deserve a pat on the back, congrats!
Coming west sounds good, got lots of time to practice. Lots of great fliers here...it'll be a nice challenge

Looking forward to hearing about it, hopefully I will be able to come out and fly the trials next year....
Provided they are willing and able, the top three finishers from the trials are your Canadian team. If, for whatever reason, somebody decides not to go, we work our way down the results list. This is the only trials for 2011, so the team members either come from the list above, or we don't field a full team.

The World Champs are held every two years, so the next trials will take place in 2012, probably in your neck of the woods, so start practicing.

And a Quart of awesome Smoked Oatmeal Stout. ( I am not allowed to sell it, but I can auction it off, if proceeds go to the F3K FAI Team )

Obviously, there will be no drinking beer at the field. The (beer) prizes I bring will be for 1st,2nd,3rd and everyone else participating.(Let me know how many !) I can bring extra ice coolers for pop/water.

I'm looking forward to this Event.

I seem to have figured out so far in my mind how I could design an F3K and be great enough to win with it !

I look fwd to meeting those who are great at F3K and learning from them. Now That is Cool !

Take care,
Have fun,

A short update. We held a warm-up "contest" at the field yesterday to make sure the sound system, scoring system, etc. are in working order. Everything went smoothly. The field is also in great shape, so everything looks good for next weekend.

Hope to see you there.

Re: Contest - 2010 Candian F3K (HLG) Team Trials

Here's the pilot/primary plane list:
  1. Ivan MacKenzie - LightHawk
  2. Doug Pike - LightSpeed
  3. Pat MacKenzie - Taboo GT
  4. Ronald Khoo - Arrow Pro
  5. Tom Rabiega - Predator 2
  6. Paul Harvey - LightHawk
  7. Ray Munro - Zefir 1.5
The only homebuilt is Ray's Zefir, which was built by Doug Pike. All the others are commercially available, but some have very long lead times.

Ivan MacKenzie.

P.S. FYI, some people in the photo (e.g. myself) are not holding their primary model, instead it's sitting in the foreground.

Figured I'd get lucky post #13 out of the way.

If the team does a fundraiser, say some nice team shirts. I would be in for one..
Can anyone list the planes that people are using in the photo?

Team Trials Report and Results
First off, thanks to all who participated, to Roy Bourke for CD'ing, and to Helmet Berger for coming out to help time. We had seven pilots entered, a little lower than hoped for, but that's the way it goes sometimes.

As Ray stated, conditions were pretty tough on Saturday: a fairly steady, strong wind which did a good job of breaking up the thermals. One instant you thought you had found "the big one", only to find it disappear and your glider low and long way from home. I don't think anyone was clean as far as landing out goes.

See the attached pdf for the results.

Re: Contest - 2010 Candian F3K (HLG) Team Trials

Hi Gents
The F3K trials are now part of Canadian history, happened on Sat 14th at the C.O.G.G. field near Alliston Ontario. For a rank newbie to this sport, I must say I totally enjoyed the event, and "Thank You" is just not enough to say to Ivan Mackenzie, and Roy Bourke who put this together. There just has to be a way to include this in the regular flying season of TD stuff we normally do, it is really a lot of fun.
The day started early under cloudy skies, and quite a stiff breeze, but warm. The breeze didn't let up until we were all sitting around afterwards and consequently during the tasks, presented a challenge to the seasoned vets and as well to the less experienced. Seven pilots showed for the event, and CD Roy Bourke with Helmet Berger as a volunteer timer made the show.

A little attrition to the fleet took place during pre-flight trimming, Doug Pike had his ship drop out of the sky with a suspect radio failure, and Pat Mackenzie's plane did a nose in that crippled it. But they were able to pick the next birds from their hangars to continue the event.
Only having read about this stuff on the net, it was interesting to see our fly zone as a small rectangle of turf, inside of probably 250 acres of green sod....particularly when the TD events take up most of an entire field.
I guess size matters...??
Although my interpretation of the tasks only come from the web, which certainly seemed daunting, at least confusing, once into the contest and an explanation from Ivan, it was just purely a lot of fun. I can only imagine what
15 or 20 pilots and timers in such a crowded "room" must be like.

Two groups, one of 4 pilots, and the other 3 made up the rounds and we were called up by Ivan,s digital voice robot computer, over the loudspeakers. Each round (seven of them) was ten minutes with a one minute time to get your plane on the ground after the round. The tasks were what I understand to be standard types:
5 x 2, ladder, last two best flights, 5 minute max, 1, 2, 3, 4 minute and I'll remember the others after I've finished this.

I understand the WC is in Sweden next July, so I'm sure there will be some practice events before then... I definitely will be out for that to give the team something challenging to worry about....(cough..choke...)

Just wish the country wasn't so big...the only way this F3K stuff can get better, is to get bigger...!!!!!

Cheers
Ray Munro
ps..maybe Roy will post his interpretation of the event as well.
