Re: Ultra cote problem

Hi Alan ; been a while. Sounds like a colour has been sprayed over the Ultracote possibly to flatten the shine.... maybe and for sure has lifted with the tape. To my knowledge all ultracote has the colour/glue under a clear covering material. I have also found that with my Eflite Deuces that the black trim was not Ultracote as advertised as the clear covering part came off/loose when flying . I re-ironed back down and seems to be ok now but the looks arn't as good. I sold lots of Ultracote ( made in West German) in years past when I ran my hobby shop and NEVER had any issues. Also found it to be superior to monocote as I have tried both. In my humble opinion that is, but there will be disputors to that statement.

Some coverings may take some types of spray paint but need roughing up and have to be very very clean ...no oily finger prints. Best tape to use in any case is painters green tape works well.

I checked on line and most original Ultracote covering is glossy type. A way to check to see if it has been painted over ( they use another word there) is take an iron to it on a place that won't show and hit the covering (just the tip) with the heated iron and if it feels sticky then it is some sort of paint. I had a model years ago that had some sort of "embosed" design over the covering and in order to shrink it I had to put some paper between the iron and covering to keep from sticking. Use plain white printer paper ( unused of course). For some reason the "embosing" did not stick to the paper. Hope this helps a bit.

A good picture might help in the lift area.

Re: Ultra cote problem

It seems like you don't have much choice, Alan.

A) live with it
b) Patch it

Patching can be done almost realistic if you cut a patch of similar ultracote and iron it on so it looks like an aluminum panel. For the cockpit problem, it would have to be on both sides to look symmetrical.

For the wing, make the patch big enough to look like it belongs there

Re: Ultra cote problem

I got a no name brand Spit off ebay and it was covered with silver plastic material that was painted camouflage. I put a coat of clear polyurethane satin over it to protect it. kind of looks realistic with the paint rubbed off and chipped in spots. Like it has been through a war!!!

Re: Ultra cote problem

The covering did have something added ..... to give it that dull looking aluminum finish .... which was easily removed with a chemical based cleaner and left the surface looking completly different .... ie: Trim Solvent ... which I unfortunatly used to try and clean up a drip of CA. Fortunatly .... only a small spot on the underside of the H-Stab ....

Sooo ... I guess a hi-tac tape will also mess up the visual appearance as well ...

Not that that helps ....

Re: Ultra cote problem

Hard to say? I saw the plane yesterday afternoon and the colour was definitely peeled away from the covering! I just went to GH to look up the model http://www.greathobbies.com/producti...rod_id=HAN2420 and it does say Ultra Cote. I believe, however, he used clear scotch tape and not the transparent stuff, but none the less it shouldn't have come off??

Colour shouldn't come off. I guess could be ultracoat base and then painted.

Ultra cote problem

On a new Hanger 9 ARF P51 60 a problem arose when scotch taping the canopy in place for gluing. When the tape was removed the silver colour on the ultra cote pealed off!! It is a flat finish silver with black detailing.

Secondly, a drop of oil landed on the outer edge of the wing. Can't seem to get it off!! There is still a very distinct stain left. Same covering as above. Any ideas on what to use to remove the stain??

I've put this same post on the ARF thread as well.

Thanks

Alan
