Re: Covering old model

Yes varsol is oily in itself. Alcohol and kitty litter is a good way to go. I have has some luck with Brake Clean but it would be expensive to do a whole air frame.

Re: Covering old model

Kip has it right. The old castor oil is vegetable based, so varsol, which is mineral based, would not work. The alcohol, which is also vegetable based would soften the old castor.

Re: Covering old model

Alcohol is the best, cleaner, dilutent for caster oil (methyl hydrate). The best success I had was kitty litter. I would burry it in kitty litter and About every four days I would take it out and shake it off then re-burry it again for another four days. It take three weeks to a month. Try coating the covering contact area with a polyurethane enamel. Use clear or the same colour as the covering.

That was my favourite as well, until they took it off the market, what? 25 years ago? I noticed that Sprayway is no longer manufactured either, but there are apparently good substitutes.
K2R is still available, but you have to order it online now: http://www.k2rbrands.com/products/original.htm

Re: Covering old model

Talcum powder, foot powder, baby powder and others will draw the oil from the wood.
After you think you have the majority of the oil seal it with Balsarite or stix-it.

Re: Covering old model

First off is it " oil " or is it old glue from the previous covering.... the oil is a bit harder to remove.. if old glue... easy as a walk in the park..

check this link to a thread I did.. in particular post # 21 and you should find the help you need..

Re: Covering old model

Beyond varsol/Stoddard, try lacquer thinner, available at the big box stores... it is a significantly more powerful solvent, evaporates faster.... but do use thicker rubber gloves as it is much more of skin irritant than Varsol.

good luck
