Re: Mark's Models SDB Dauntless

The original owner of this kit has been drooling over the build, and given our current desire to downsize, and prepare for retirement, I've sold it back to him. It's an amazing kit, with huge amounts of detail, so if you ever have the chance to get your hands on one, I'd highly recommend it. Hope to see it fly in the future.

Re: Mark's Models SDB Dauntless

Not of late, the full scale Hurricane has been my main priority, and the Yellow Aircraft Spit I was building for a buddy. 1/4 Bergfalke glider is my high priority RC project, want that done and test flown before our slopefest in August. Once the Hurricane is done, I can speed up a pile of RC builds.

Couple of shots. Fuse sitting on the wing, checking fit of the wing fillets, and getting a rough idea of the stab's alignment. Once the wing fillets are done, I'll finish the wing mounting bits, and can then get ready to mount the horizontal and vertical stabs.

Some shots of the fuselage construction. The fuse is built up around a plywood centerline frame, that runs the length of the fuse. Super easy alignment, and for a really old die cut kit, fit is very good. The kit comes with pre-cut sheeting, with index marks that align to tabs in the ply frame. The sheeting is 1/8th very hard balsa. Set that aside, and sheeted the fuse with 1/6th balsa, after sanding off all the ply tabs. With all the curves, and plenty of frames, stringers, etc, more than enough support for the 1/16th skin. Wing fillets I did using two layers of 1/32nd balsa that I'd been saving for such a job. When both layers are on, it's incredibly strong, and formed without any wetting to the ply fillet bulkheads. More pics to come, of the remainder of the sheeting, including the 1/32nd ply undersides to the fillets. Pilots seat, back rest, and armoured plate are installed. Seat tack glued, will be removed, and painted along with the cockpit interior.

I've completely glassed the wing, using .5 oz cloth, so lots of sanding yet, but it's looking good. Once I'm done that, I'll finish the ailerons, and do the rough installation of those. After that, the flaps/divebrakes, and then cutting out the hatches, wire runs, and wheel wells. Tons of work to go on the wing, but she's getting there!

The Dauntless kit is a builder's dream, and has tons of scale info on the plans, and in the instructions. Should be a really fun build! I've been puttering away at it since Friday, first thing in the AM, when I didn't want to be flashing up power tools for the Hurricane project. Fit of parts is really good. 99% of the balsa die cutting is perfect, and about 80% of the lite ply. For such an old kit, the ply is really flat, no warps to worry about. The fuse jigs together very quickly.

Got the last wing panel sheeted, and leading edge glued on. Need to get the trailing edge attached, then cut the slot, and shape, and install wing tip. Once that's all done, I'll start working on the flaps and ailerons.

Re: Mark's Models SDB Dauntless

There's slots, and slats. Slots are internal to the wing, and slats are on the leading edge, or extended off the leading edge. Some, such as the Storch, are fixed, whereas the slats on the Me-109, and Me-262 were moveable. To further muddy the waters, while the slats on the German fighters were spring loaded, and not controllable, those on aircraft such as the A-7 Corsair II were fully adjustable, usually in conjunction with the flaps. Slats vary the wing geometry, affective changing wing camber, while slots do not, they simply increase aileron effectiveness in the stall, producing additional lift, and directing airflow, at high angles of attack.
