Re: windscreen tint advice

I used RIT for the canopy of my 2M Great Planes Spirit, I wanted a dark grey tint, so I bought black dye.
The canopy turned out bronze - not what I expected, but very classy none-the-less.

The pieces i am doing will be just flat so I might see if I can get a small piece of automotive tint, quick and easy.

Much appreciated.

I bought some a while back with the thought of doing that to my RC Cars but unfortunately, it didn't stick well to the curved plastic so I have a bunch left. If you want some just let me know, I have both black and silver.

Hornet Hobbies in Toronto carries a line of tinting paint that gives you smoke, blue, silver and is specific to tinting model windshields & windows.

If the surfaces are reasonably flat, I have used the automotive film tint with success. This was a 20% Limo black which is the darkest I could get.

I have used Rit and Tintex dyes on canopies with success. that being said, some canopy materials take it better than others. (differences in the plastic, I guess)

Basically, I mix the dye per the instructions then before trimming it I place the canopy upside down in a pan, supporting it all round with sandbags or in abed of foam peanuts ( or whatever) then fill it with the dye. Let it sit for an hour or so, empty it out, and if it's not dark enough, do it again.

As you can see by the attached pictures the sailplane is lightly tinted so you can see the pilot figure, but the Super Sportster is much darker as there is no figure in there to see.

Try this:

It's used for tinting taillights/headlights etc... I was gonna try next time I do a new body for my truck but I haven't got around to it yet...

Re: windscreen tint advice

There is no real tint per se, the problem is that any paint will not really be like tint in that you can see through it. Paint will not be translucent. If you don't care about seeing through it then there are options like grey, silver, smoke, black... etc. If the canopy is polycarbonate (lexan) then it works well but just keep in mind you want multiple coats sprayed very lightly and will want to back it with white if you want a lighter, brighter color-or use black if you want it darker. If you want a silver color then use silver with a black backing (similar to a mirror).

With most of my cars I use 4-5 coats of the color I want then 2-3 coats of black or white. Let the paint dry for around 20 minutes between coats or you can use a heat gun VERY CAREFULLY about 15-20cm away from the item for about 10 minutes. Each coat must be completely dry before applying the next.

Re: windscreen tint advice

RIT dye is supposed to work well. Here are some ideas I quickly found.
