I've used the battery drop off's at Staples and Home Depot before.

Although Lithium batteries are not toxic (to the environment) unlike Ni-Mh and Ni-Cd, it's still probably better to recycle them than bin them.

As for disposal, Thunderpower's guide is one method:

I usually skip the salt water bath part and just short the battery once it's completely dead. This way it's completely safe and won't suddenly combust if it gets crushed, etc.

Perhaps consider adding one of those low voltage buzzers to your project. The power tool does not have a proper LVC, so it's easy to over-discharge the pack. At least this would give you a warning:

While on the subject, I often wondered what to do with my dead lipos, and I found this:

Good for nicads, NiMh and alkaline batteries too

I like that! Great idea to rejuvenate a good drill!

I've something similar with a big LED flashlight. I got tired of buying 4 "D" cells for it. I took a pair of A123 1100 cells from a Dewalt pack and wired them in via an XT-60 pig tail soldered to the 4cell holder's contacts inside the case. Works like a charm...that LED is considered a Laser product at 6 volts...you should see it at 7.2!!

Lipo recycling...

This is not exactly r/c airplane related but a project made of r/c parts...

I have and old set of cordless tools and all the battery packs are pretty much dead. Since I also have a bunch of old 4s 2200 mHa lipo packs that I don't use anymore for my airplanes, I tough I could use them as replacement for the old Nicads.

I just had to make some room in the casing using a dremel and make a hole for the charging plug. I soldered an old Deans connector to the wiring and it was pretty much done. The cordless drill was using 14.4 volt battery packs so the 4s lipo are just perfect and if I ever need the lipo pack, all I have to do is remove 3 screws.
