Just to keep things in perspective here, I'd like to relate some SPL measurements I did at Vintage Wings of Canada. I was fortunate enough to be able to attend an engine run up on their Hawker Hurricane which has a Rolls Royce Merlin V12 engine. It has a wingspan of 40ft and I was able to stand at the wingtip while I was making my recording at that position, some 20ft (6m) away from the engine. At that distance I measured 96dB SPL. Taking into account it was 6m away and not the 1m that is used as an industry standard for loudspeaker SPL 's, that equates to an SPL of 111dB at 1m distance. So our sound system SPL of 107db at 1m is only 4dB short of the real Hurricane airplane engine - not too shabby, I would say. The problem with distance is that SPL suffers from an inverse square law - i.e. if you double the distance, you lower the SPL to 1/4 or 6dB, not half or 3dB. So for example, at 10 times the distance, you lower the SPL by 20dB. This is a basic law of physics which you cannot get round and it applies to real airplanes and helicopters as well as model ones. Re: Recommend a Sound System for Electric Plane Have heard Model Sounds system a few years ago and it is good , complete with machine guns. As mentioned, you get what you pay for and you get , in Canada, support. Not, throw it away ,when it quits working. Having said that, a good system will never replace the actual throaty sound of a real full size aircraft. As for jets , I haven't heard any sound system yet to compare , only the real thing. |

Please see this article I wrote last year on my web site about those limits: http://www.modelsoundsinc.com/articl...undSystems.pdf RC Modellers thinking about using any RC sound system from ANY manufacturer, not just Model Sounds Inc., have to tame their expectations and align them with what is practically achievable using the best of today's technology for loudspeakers, amplifiers and batteries. If you had unlimited payload capacity for much larger and more sensitive loudspeakers, more powerful amplifiers and much larger batteries, then it would be possible to theoretically get up to about 120dB, but who wants to carry a 1000Watt amplifier, speakers and batteries in their model airplanes? |

Re: Recommend a Sound System for Electric Plane This is my digital sound meter and the system produced the sound as advertised on the ground with the speakers pointing down and the sound reflecting off the ground. Even better off of something hard like concrete. In the air for some reason perhaps the frequency and the speakers being directional the sound did not come close to anything like a gas motor doing a flyby. At best it was more in the realm of a 40 to 60 size nitro with a good muffler. Even my YS 1.20 produces a more pleasing volume in my 76 inch biplane. Clevis I too have flown gas for years not only was I looking forward to hearing the real engine sounds but the machine guns and other sounds the unit was capable of. However even with 6S lipos I think you will find the volume doesn't have the presence you will be expecting. It is what it is, the system is only capable of so much nice for a smaller model not so much for an 80 inch plus model. If you get one let us know if you think the sound is a match for larger models. Yes I picked this one because it was Canadian and at the time sound files were free. I was even supplied with Lycoming 540 sound file for my 60 inch MXS test bed. Like I said for a 60 inch model the sound is ok. Dennis |

Re: Recommend a Sound System for Electric Plane I've been flying nitro & gas planes for years and I still enjoy the sound and roar of these engines. I plan on getting a medium sized electric warbird plane. I'm wondering if you ever measured the db on these systems. Would it be under 98db? If so,by how much in your opinion? |

I installed it as per your verbal instructions using max power and the best 4 inch speakers you sold. I said it lacked the volume one might expect if it was installed in a larger model. It worked flawlessly for two seasons then failed. I wanted it repaired you said that was not possible and offered a discount if I purchased a new. All I said was 300 bucks for two seasons was to expensive. I also stated the sound was no better or worse than any of the others I had heard. Electronics can and will fail on occasion I understand that and it was my choice not to replace the unit as it didnot really meet my expectations for a larger electric Mustang. However if I only got two seasons of moderate use from even Hobby King electonics I would be disapointed. If your unit would have failed in the air and locked up the controls I could have been out a 800 dollar plus airplane. Dennis |
