Re: Folding Hquad build

This was all CNC cut.

I think this design met my goals but ended up on the heavy side. I have a few things I can do to lighten it without reducing the stiffness of the frame.

In the mean time I am working on a revision to my tricopter frame.

I don't think I will ever offer the big Hquad for sale but the tricopter performs well enough that I might.

Very impressive!
Did you trace this and cut it out by hand or do you have some cnc 3quipment?
P.s. liking the tilt setup for the camera

Let me know how laser works for you...

I talked to my friend Martin at MRAerodesign.com and he said G10 doesn't do very well in a laser cutter... But you friend might have a different set-up.. Very curious to know how it turn out.

Thanks

Re: Folding Hquad build

Despite having a CNC mill this frame required quite a bit of hand finishing. My mill is not really meant for material this hard so it runs into issues with material shift so I end up redrilling many of the holes and filing bits to make it fit well.

A buddy of mine wants to try cutting G10 on his laser. That would get rid of a lot of the hand finishing needed and would work out better for kits.

I also would probably buy thinner material for the top and bottom plates. It is stiff as a board right now but it is heavy.

He sells big sheets and even cut them to size for my CNC mill. Seems pretty enthused about quadcopters. Even started selling black G10 recently.
Very interesting!
So, you have your own CNC, pretty awesome!
Would you be willing and selling a frame kit??

Cheers

Re: Folding Hquad build

I cut all the parts on my hobby cnc. As for countersinking it doesn't really effect strength all that much because you should only be loading rivets in shear.

Finally got it all together and flying today. Flew pretty good. One motor vibrates at certain rpm's so it will need some balancing.

I redid the motor mounts here are the Mk2 mounts.

I like that as well. My only question is ... how strong are the motor mount to frame joints. You have made the very clean, and I was planning on something similar, but when you look at the photo and see a bunch of the material has been taken away in the counter sink process ... just makes me go hmmmmmm.

Did you have the top and bottom cut by cnc or did you do it by hand ... it looks very good.

Keep up the good work.

Cheers,

Tom
