Re: Amazing Aerotowing Experience

Thanks for the information . The last time we towed we did not make any turns , just straight into the wind , steep climb out . Did not get the release height we wanted but also no issues . Next time we will follow your advice , steep into the wind , a slow turn to level flight then back into the wind for one more altitude gain . Really enjoy Aerotowing , adds one more aspect to our hobby . So far Dennis & I fly helis , electric 3d , large gas models , control line , aerotow now & will be slope soaring when we get some extra time . We live in the country & there is a lot of distance between us & other modelers but do attend the odd fun fly & will promote towing gliders when we can .

Once again thanks guys for sharing your ideas with us .

Robert .

Guys,

I would like to ask a question to the guys who have posted on this thread;

How many of you guys would be willing to try and promote Aerotowing at your local power clubs?

Re: Amazing Aerotowing Experience

I have found it is better to do all or most of the climbing upwind, use the downwind leg just as a transit. Of course with overpowered tugs and experience its less critical. Also with a powerful tug I have towed poly ships near vertical so you are just dragging them up. But yes the take off and release transition can get crazy.

If my old memory serves correct I recall a story of a sailplane that was towed up without RX power on and successfully towed back to the ground. Point is sometimes too much stick input is your enemy.

I'll be heading to some of the remaining events myself, with the SailaireAT.
Come check it out, lots of fun and a really nice group of guys.

Re: Amazing Aerotowing Experience

Hey , thanks for the input . We towed the modified Electra three times last weekend without any problems . This time we took the glider off from the ground , headed straight into the wind & did not make any turns . Worked great . Next time we try it we will continue to practice like this but start to add some gentle turns . Last time there was no lift that we could find , hopefully next time the air will be better .

Thanks for sharing the link to the photos , great stuff . Maybe when I retire I may get to attend some of these events .

Re: Amazing Aerotowing Experience

BoatCrazy,

The first thing is to get the guys at your power field interested in towing you, then when they see how much fun you are having, they will want to try it from the other end of the towline!
